HAMILTON – Colgate Softball launched two home runs to pull away for a 9-1 series-opening victory over Army on a beautiful Friday afternoon at Eaton Street Softball Complex.
Marina Taveras drilled her 11th home run of the season – a three-run blast over everything in left field – as part of her two-hit, four-RBI performance at the plate. Lily Haluska went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, and two RBIs. Tealla Rivera also belted her third homer of the season.
In the circle, Maya Servedio started strong and finished strong to improve to 4-0 on the season. She scattered two hits and an earned run with five strikeouts over five innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Colgate scored first on an RBI single from Kayla Martin, who punched a full-count delivery into right-center field for the game's first run in the bottom of the second. Army evened the score with a solo home run by Taylor Brown in the top of the third but it was not tied for long.
The Raiders took the lead for good with three runs in the third and exploded for five more in the fourth. An RBI single from Taveras put the Raiders back in front, 2-1, before a two-run double to right-center by Haluska pushed the lead to 4-1.
Colgate's power made its presence in the fourth when Rivera drove a 1-2 pitch over the wall in left center for a two-run blast. Four batters later, Taveras crushed a three-run bomb into the parking lot to score Sydney Berg and Analisa Raffaelli and make it 9-1.
Servedio tossed a perfect fifth inning, striking out two, to seal the series-opening victory.
