WEST POINT, N.Y. (4/2/11) – The Colgate Softball team opened Patriot League play with a pair of shutouts against Army on Saturday. The Raiders won the first game 4-0 and the second game 2-0.
In the first game, freshman
Rachel LeCoq registered her first collegiate shutout after throwing seven innings only allowing four hits. Colgate (10-11, 2-0) scored two runs in the first inning and followed with one in the second and another in the seventh to give LeCoq her seventh win of the season. Sophomore
Alana Dyson finished the game hitting 3-of-4 with one run scored, while
Jennifer Ortega provided the power with her third homer of the season and two RBI.
In the second game,
Courtney O'Connell pitched seven scoreless innings allowing four hits while striking out six to record the Raiders second-straight shutout. The Raiders again scored early with a run in the second inning and added an insurance run in the seventh to secure the win. Dyson drove in the first run with a single to left field and scored the second off a single by
Stephanie Hartquist.
Army (14-12, 0-2) had a chance to tie the game in the second inning after Alexis AuBuchon led off with a deep shot to center field, but the ball was grabbed by
Tera Vaughn on the fence to deny her a home run.
The back-to-back shutouts by Colgate are the first since sweeping Lehigh in the final two games of the 2007 Patriot League Tournament.
The Raiders will continue league play tomorrow (Sunday, April 3) with two more games at Army. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Army Softball Complex.
