KISSIMMEE, Fla. (3/13/11) – The Colgate Softball team only gave up two earned runs, but dropped both games on Sunday during the second day of the Rebel Spring Games. The Raiders lost the first game to Siena 3-2 and then fell to Butler 3-1 in the second game.
In the first game, Siena (4-4) scored first in the second inning off a throwing error and a two out hit. The Saints would hold that lead until the fifth inning before the Raiders crossed the plate.
Colgate (3-6) opened the fifth with a pinch-hit single by freshman
Jennifer Martin for her first collegiate hit. Then after a fielder's choice by
Natalie Siedhof sophomore
Alana Dyson would reach on a throwing error and advance to second, while Siedhof advanced to third. Freshman
Haley Fleming then grounded out to second, but was credited with an RBI as Siedhof crossed the plate and Dyson advanced to third. After a pitching change by the Saints Dyson would score on a wild pitch to give Colgate a 2-1 lead through five innings.
The Saints would strike back in the top of the sixth inning with a pair of runs to take a 3-2 lead and was then able to put the Raiders down in order over the final two innings. Sophomore
Courtney O'Connell started the game for Colgate and pitched five strong innings giving up four hits and one run while striking out three Saints. Freshman
Rachel LeCoq pitched the final two innings not allowing a hit but gave up both runs in the sixth inning to suffer her first collegiate loss.
In game two, the Raiders scored first in the third inning when Martin came home on a throwing error after doubling to left center to start the inning.
Butler (3-5) was able to tie the game in the fourth inning after a throwing error and then added two more runs in the sixth inning off back-to-back doubles to hand Colgate its second loss of the day.
LeCoq pitched the entire game striking out a career-high eight batters while only giving up one earned run to suffer her second straight loss.
Colgate will be back in action on Tuesday at the Stetson Roundup in Deland, Fla. The Raiders will face Iowa at 2 p.m. followed by the host Stetson at 6 p.m.
