Softball Splits First Day at Rebel Spring Games

Tera Vaughn
Game One vs. Wagner

Game Two vs. Sacred Heart

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (3/12/11)
–Freshman outfielder Tera Vaughn recorded six hits with three runs batted in as the Colgate Softball team split a pair of games on the first day of the Rebel Spring Games. The Raiders dropped the opener to Wagner 4-2, before topping Sacred Heart 5-3 in the second game.

In the first game, Colgate (3-4) recorded eight hits including Nicole Siedhof's 10th career home run but committed three errors that accounted for a pair of runs to give Wagner its first win of the season.

The Seahawks struck first with two runs in the top of the fourth inning after a couple of errors by Colgate. But the Raiders answered back with a run in the bottom of the fourth after a pair of doubles. Siedhof led off the inning with a double to deep center. Eileen Ornousky was then brought in as a pinch runner and scored after Vaughn doubled to left center to make the score 2-1.

Colgate crossed the plate again in the sixth inning thanks to Siedhof's first homer of the season to tie the score 2-2. The Raiders had a chance to take the lead after Vaughn tripled with one out. But she was thrown out at home after Courtney O'Connell flew out to right field.

The score stayed the same until the Seahawks scored two more unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning to hand Colgate its second extra inning loss of the season. O'Connell pitched a complete game giving up eight hits and no earned runs for Colgate, while Amanda Garcia threw eight solid innings for Wagner.

In game two, the Raiders bats exploded for five runs in the sixth inning to guide freshman Rachel LeCoq to her third straight win in the circle.

Sacred Heart (6-7) crossed the plate first in the opening inning on a two out single by Liz Tsipouras to take a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers would then hold that lead until the sixth inning before the Colgate responded in a big way.

Sophomore Alana Dyson opened the sixth with a triple to right center and was brought home by a single from freshman Haley Fleming to tie the game 1-1. After a sac bunt by Jennifer Ortega and a walk by Siedhof put runners on first and second Vaughn was able to drive both of them home with her second double of the day to give Colgate a 3-1 lead. Stephanie Hartquist would keep the inning going with a single down the left field line to bring home Vaughn for the fourth run. The Raiders then load the bases with two outs for Dyson, who recorded her second hit of the inning to make the score 5-1. Fleming would end the inning with a hard hit liner to first base.

Sacred Heart would score two runs in the bottom of the seventh off a two out double by Courtney Lee to make the final score 5-3. LeCoq pitched her third complete game of the season giving up seven hits and three runs, while striking out six. Vaughn finished the game hitting a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBI.

Colgate is back in action on Sunday for the second day of the Rebel Spring Games. The Raiders take on Siena at 9 a.m. and then face Butler at 11 a.m.
