Dan Fridgen ’82 Selected to ECAC Hockey’s Top-50 Players

Dan Fridgen
ALBANY, N.Y. (2/16/11) – Former Colgate standout and three-time team captain Dan Fridgen '82 has been named as one of ECAC Hockey's top 50 players as the league announced its eighth installment of the list.

As part of its 50th anniversary celebration, ECAC Hockey has comprised a group of its top 50 players to recognize the storied history of the League and honor its significant players. The top 50 players were determined by a selection committee made up of former coaches and media members. These honorees were tallied from 145 players (47 defensemen; 73 forwards; and 25 goaltenders).

Fridgen was an amazing scorer for the Raiders and holds the all-time goal scoring record for Colgate with 114 goals in 113 career games. He was the first player in Colgate history to reach 100 goals and is one of only two players in the history of the program to do so. Overall, he ranks fourth on Colgate's all-time scoring list with 192 points. He was a two-time ECAC Hockey goals leader in 1981 (37 goals) and 1982 (38 goals), to go with the points leader in 1981 with 68 points in 34 games. He was named all-conference second team after the 1981 season.

He was named Colgate's best offensive player twice and holds the record for goals in a single season with 38 in 29 games in 1982. His point total of 68 in 1980-81 is also a single season record. Fridgen has the record for most consecutive games with a goal as he tallied a goal in 12-straight games in 1980-81. He also had hat tricks in four-straight games and was featured in Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd. He posted nine overall hat tricks in his career, which is the third highest in Colgate history. His effort in 1980-81, led Colgate to its first-ever 20-win season with 21 victories.

After graduation, he joined the Hartford Whalers of the National Hockey League and appeared in 13 games with two goals and three assists. He was voted into the Colgate Athletics Hall of Honor in 1995.

Following his player days, he was head coach at Rensselaer from 1994 to 2006, posting a school-record 211 wins and a .520 winning percentage. Now Fridgen can be heard as a hockey color commentator for Time Warner Sports in Upstate New York. He has done countless Colgate contests, as well as some in the Capital District.

Boston University's Bob Brown, Cornell's Doug Ferguson, Boston College's Tim Sheehy and Todd White of Clarkson, were the other four selections in the eighth installment.
