HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/8/11) – Kaylee Fifer set a career-high with 12 kills to lead the Colgate women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-12, 25-15) win over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon in league action.
Colgate (7-11, 4-1 PL) got 38 assists from Fifer to give her the double-double, while
Lindsay Young once again led the team with 14 kills, hitting 43 percent.
Diane Seely stepped up with 11 kills and hit over 38 percent from the floor.
Caitlin Cremin was tops in the dig category with 12 and
Kenzie Hume had five total blocks.
Allie Dyer and
Lexi Finger were exceptional servers tonight with four aces apiece.
Bucknell (4-10, 1-4 PL) saw Anne Ellenberger strike for eight kills and Kate Tauscher had 18 helpers. The Bison struggled at the front of the net and hit just 15 percent as a team.
“We got great production from our outside hitters,” said head coach
Ryan Baker. “Young put up big numbers and she was a go-to player throughout the match. Blair Safir did a great job at the front and back line. I was extremely pleased with our passing game and this allowed us to hit well tonight.”
The Raiders came out to the floor and opened up a 10-5 lead early in the first set after Seely had three kills and Fifer had two. Bucknell tried to come back with two-consecutive points, but Colgate was able to keep a three-point cushion throughout the first set. The Bison cut the lead to 14-12 with a kill by Katie Baumgarten, but the Raiders went on a short 4-1 run with kills by rookies Hume and Seely to make it 18-13. Bucknell never recovered and the Raiders won the first set, going away at 25-16. Young and Seely led the way with four kills apiece in the set.
After a sluggish second set by Colgate and a 25-21 loss, the Raiders stepped up with a dominating 25-12 performance in the second set. They jumped out to a 10-5 lead with aces from Fifer and
Kaylee Dougherty. The Bison also helped out with six errors. The lead then ballooned to 14-6 on two aces by Dyer. She served for five-straight points and upped the advantage to 16-7. Then Fifer took over with three kills, mixed in with a few Bison miscues, and the lead was up to 21-11.
Michelle McCarthy, who was seeing her first action of the season, then put home a kill and Safir did as well as Colgate won the third set 25-12.
The Raiders made quick work of Bucknell in the fourth set as they earned an early 10-2 lead. Fifer and Young had three kills apiece during the run to 10 points. The Raiders increased the advantage to 10 points twice in the first 24 points and had a 17-7 lead after two more service aces from Dyer. The Raiders had their largest lead at 24-12. The Bison spoiled the quick set win with four-straight points, but Fifer put the match away with her 12th kill of the night to give Colgate a 25-15 win in the third set and a 3-1 win in the match.
The Raiders will be back in action on Tuesday night as Cornell travels to Hamilton for a 7 p.m. start at Cotterell Court.
NOTES: Colgate got its 28th win against Bucknell all-time and has won five of the last six meetings … the Raiders hit their best percentage of the season at 37 percent … had just 12 errors on 111 attacks and just missed the season high for kills with 53 … Colgate had a season high 54 strikes against TCU in a four-set match … the Raiders had 14 aces and that is first time since Oct. 30 of 2009 that Colgate had reached double-digits in aces … Dyer and Finger joined Young as the only three to have four aces this season in a single match … Young had her 12th-straight match with 10 or more kills … she hit a season-high 43 percent … Seely reached 10 or more kills for the third time and was one off her seasons best.
