Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. (10/8/11)
– Junior Mike Reidy was able to score on a penalty kick in the 73rd minute to give the Colgate men's soccer team its first Patriot League win of the season over Holy Cross, 1-0.

The Raiders, who now have a 1-1-1 league mark, denied Holy Cross a single shot on goal.

In the first half both teams came out playing strong, determined to take an early lead en route to securing their first league win. Colgate (7-2-2, 1-1-1 PL) struck first, creating a few opportunities on net but was unable to find success. As the game progressed, the Crusaders began to generate some offense of their own, but a series of strong defensive plays from the Raiders were enough to keep Holy Cross at bay. The teams continued to play a physical game as the clock wound down, but at the end of the first 45 minutes of play, the score remained 0-0.

Colgate played a more offensive game in the second half, outshooting the Crusaders 7-4 over the next 45 minutes. However, despite attacking the net aggressively and taking a number of shots on net, one of which hit the post from Reidy, the Raiders were unable to get on the scoreboard. It was not until the 73:48 mark when a rough sliding tackle by a Holy Cross player in the box resulted in a Colgate penalty kick, giving the Raiders a chance to take the lead. Reidy stepped up to the plate and did not falter, firing the ball into the back of the net to give his team the 1-0 advantage.

The team was then able to maintain its lead over the next 16 minutes to win its first league game of the season and secure a much-needed three points in league play.

"It is always great to get three points on the road," stated head coach Erik Ronning. "I am very proud of the effort we put forth."

Colgate will resume play with a road matchup against Cornell on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
