HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/25/11)
– Senior goaltender Kimberly Sass had a career-high 58 saves in the Colgate women's hockey 6-2 ECAC Hockey setback to #3/3 Cornell on Tuesday night in Starr Rink.

Sass became the fourth goalie in school history to record 50 or more saves. It was also the fourth time in her career that she has made 40 or more stops in a game.

Cornell came out to an explosive start in its first game of the season, outshooting the Raiders 17-5 in the opening 20 minutes of the game. The Big Red's attacking play resulted in an early power play goal at the 4:27 mark to give the team a 1-0 lead. Cornell was then able to take advantage of its offensive momentum and tally two more goals in the period, first at the 6:37 mark and then with four minutes left, to end the first stanza with a 3-0 advantage.

The second frame was very physical, resulting in a total of eight penalties being called in the 20 minutes of play. This time around however, Colgate (3-3, 0-1 ECAC Hockey) struck first with five straight shots on net, one of which hit the pipe from Brittany Phillips during a power play advantage, but was unable to find a goal. As the period continued so did the power play opportunities, as each team committed one penalty after another, which eventually led to a 4-on-3 advantage for Cornell at one point. Amongst all the penalties, the Raiders were able to find a power play goal midway through the frame at the 11:39 mark when freshman Casey Dockus fired a shot at the goalie that rebounded to sophomore Megan Wickens. Wickens used her strength to get a touch on the puck, passing it up to classmate Taylor Volpe who then blasted it into the net to put the score at 3-1. Cornell then turned things around with a short handed goal in the 14th minute followed by a power play goal less than two minutes later to extend its lead to 5-1.

Not discouraged by the two quick goals, Colgate continued to play hard and was rewarded with a goal in the final 33 seconds of the period to reduce the score to 5-2. Freshman Melissa Kueber scored the Raiders' second goal after picking up a rebounded shot from junior Jessica Hootz and then knocking it past the Big Red's goalie to score her sixth goal of the season. Sophomore Jocelyn Simpson was also credited with an assist.

Cornell then went on to score its final goal early in the final frame to put the final score at 6-2 and secure its first win of the season.

The Raiders were outshot 64-12 in the game. Freshman Jillian Saulnier scored four of the Big Red's six goals in her first collegiate game.

Colgate will resume play this weekend when it hosts ECAC Hockey opponents Brown and Yale on Friday, Oct. 28 and Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively, both in Starr Rink.
