HANOVER, N.H. (10/25/11) – The Colgate men's soccer team experienced its fourth setback of the season when it fell to Dartmouth 1-0 on Tuesday night.
The Raiders now have a 9-4-3 overall record, dropping their third one-goal game of the season.
In the first half, Colgate (9-4-3-3, 3-1-1 PL) came out putting pressure on Dartmouth's goal with a pair of corner kicks by sophomore
Barrett Metzger and a shot from freshman
Jimmy McLaughlin. The teams continued to battle back and fourth on the field as they attempted to control the ball possession and find the first goal of the game. The Raiders held majority of the scoring opportunities throughout the half but at the end of the first 45 minutes of play, the game remained scoreless. The Big Green did not have a single shot in the first period while Colgate had two.
Dartmouth came out to the more aggressive start in the second half, attacking the Raiders' net in an attempt to make up for its lack of shots in the first period. The Big Green's persistence eventually led to a a goal at the 62:16 mark to give the team the 1-0 lead. Colgate then took the reigns, creating several scoring attempts, one of which came close to finding the net in the 71st minute off a shot by senior co-captain
Steven Miller that was denied by a Dartmouth defender to keep the score at 1-0. As the period came to a close, the game became more physical which resulted in several fouls and a yellow card for the Big Green. The Raiders then had a trio of late attempts from Metzger and McLaughlin in the final minutes of play but could not find an equalizer to force the game into overtime.
Junior
Grant Reed had one save in net for Colgate while Noah Cohen had four for the Big Green.
“Despite losing, we played very well,” stated head coach
Erik Ronning. “We had one defensive lapse and Dartmouth capitalized. We were unlucky not to get the equalizer and are very disappointed with the loss, but we grew as a team today and I hope it carries over to this weekend and the rest of our games.”
The Raiders return to Van Doren Field this weekend with a Patriot League matchup against Bucknell on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 4 p.m.
