VESTAL, N.Y. (10/18/11) – The Colgate men's soccer team played to its third double overtime tie of the season, 1-1, against Binghamton on Tuesday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
Junior
Patrick Letourneau gave the Raiders an early lead with a goal midway through the first half, but then a goal from Binghamton early in the second period sent the game into overtime.
Colgate (8-3-3, 2-1-1 PL) came out to a strong start in the first half, taking the first strikes at net in the opening minutes of play. As the half continued, Binghamton began to find some offensive opportunities, but at the 22:53 mark it was the Raiders that were able to get on the scoreboard first off a corner kick. Sophomore
Barrett Metzger curled the ball into the box and then, after a rebound, found its way to Letourneau who knocked it into the back of the net to put the score at 1-0. The Bearcats then attempted to make up the one-goal deficit, coming close on several occasions but were denied by junior goalkeeper
Grant Reed. Both teams continued to play very attacking soccer throughout the half but at the end of the first 45 minutes, the score remained 1-0 in favor of Colgate.
After what must have been a very productive half time talk, Binghamton came out to an aggressive start, finding an equalizer off a fast break 13 minutes into the period to tie the game at 1-1. The Raiders then went on an offensive surge of their own, firing numerous shots at the frame and finding several corner opportunities, but they could not find a goal to reclaim their lead. The teams continued to go back and forth in search of a late goal but at the end of regulation time the score remained tied at 1-1.
In its fifth overtime game of the season, Colgate came out looking for an early game-winner. But after the first ten minutes of additional time, neither team was able to find a shot and the Raiders could not find a another goal from their pair of corner kicks. The second overtime period was a more attacking one, with Colgate finding a pair of scoring opportunities from junior
Shane Conlin to help ignite the offense. However, despite some late attempts on net, the Raiders were forced to settle with their third double overtime tie.
Reed and senior
Chris Miller both saw time in goal for Colgate, making two saves apiece, while the Bearcats' Chris Hayen had six.
“Overall it was a strong and gritty performance,” stated head coach
Erik Ronning. “We played great team defense and generated some really quality opportunities. We made one mistake and Binghamton made us pay for it. Against a tough and well coached team like Binghamton, you can never lose focus and we did for a brief moment. We had a couple of great chances to get another goal but could not produce the finished product. After a day of recovery, we will start getting ready for a very strong Lafayette team in Easton.”
The team will return to its Patriot League schedule this weekend when it travels to Lafayette for a matchup on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. in Easton, Pa.
