HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/17/11) – The Colgate men's soccer team will travel to Binghamton on Tuesday, Oct. 18 for a non-conference matchup against the Bearcats at 7 p.m. in Vestal, N.Y.
The Raiders are coming off a 3-2 overtime win over Army on Saturday. Senior co-captain
Steven Miller scored the team's two opening goals, one of which was from a penalty kick, while junior
Shane Conlin scored the game-winner in overtime.
MCLAUGHLIN EARNS ROOKIE AWARD
Freshman
Jimmy McLaughlin was named this week's BRINE Patriot League Rookie of the Week for his performance in the team's win over the Black Knights last weekend. The rookie had an assist in the game-winning goal after making a strong run down the left wing and then slipping the ball to Conlin who scored the goal.
McLaughlin received the award for the second time this season.
SCORING LEADERS
Colgate (8-3-2, 2-1-1 PL) is led by Miller who has 14 points from seven goals. The senior is ranked first in the league in goals and goals per game, and is second in points and points per game. Miller is followed by Conlin who has three goals and one assist for seven points. Senior co-captain
Mike Reese and McLaughlin are third with four points each. Reese has two game-winning goals while McLaughlin has one goal and two assists.
DEFENDING THE NET
In goal, the team is led by junior
Grant Reed who has started in all 13 games and has a total of 19 saves for a .760 save percentage. He has recorded five shutouts this season, which has him tied at second in the league. Behind him is senior
Chris Miller who has played in four games, has a .600 save percentage and two wins, including last weekend's contest against Army.
SERIES
Binghamton leads the all-time series, owning an 11-8-4 record since the teams first met in 1975. Colgate has a 5-6 record on the road against the Bearcats, having lost the last two meetings in Vestal, N.Y. The most recent matchup between the two squads was in the 2010 season when they tied 1-1 in double overtime at the Colgate Raider Adidas Fall Classic.
SCOUTING BINGHAMTON
The Bearcats (4-8-1, 0-3-1 America East) are coming off a scoreless double overtime tie with Albany and a 1-0 loss to UMBC last week. The team's four wins this season were over Syracuse, Rider, Houston Baptist and Bucknell. It has also suffered losses to West Virginia, Ohio State, Central Connecticut, Cornell, Adelphi, Vermont and New Hampshire.
Binghamton is led by junior Jake Keegan and sophomore Luke Halberg. Keegan leads the team with 12 points from four goals and four assists while Halberg has two goals and two assists for six points. Leading the way in goal is sophomore Chris Hayen who has started in eight games this season and has a total of 33 saves for a .625 save percentage.
