ITHACA, N.Y. (10/11/11) – The Colgate men's soccer team dropped its third game of the season on Tuesday night when it fell to Cornell 1-0 at Berman Field.

The Big Red was able to find a late goal in the 81st minute to win the game after outshooting Colgate 15-8.

In the first half both teams came out looking for an early goal, creating scoring opportunities on both ends of the field. Cornell struck first with a shot in the opening minutes but then Colgate (7-3-2, 1-1-1 PL) returned the favor minutes later with a series of opportunities of its own to even it out. Midway through the half however, the teams hit a bit of a dry patch as they struggled to generate some offense in the final twenty minutes of the period. This eventually resulted in scoreless first half with only eight shots taken, five of which were from Cornell and almost all of which were in the first twenty minutes of play.

After a slow first 45 minutes, the Big Red decided to pick up the tempo and come out to an attacking start, which resulted in a flurry of shots on goal as they attacked Colgate's net. Feeling the pressure, the Raiders stepped up their game as they attempted to create some scoring opportunities but could not get a shot off. Cornell continued to hold the shooting advantage well into the second half until junior Mike Reidy broke the 44-minute dry spell with a shot on goal at the 67:35 mark that was saved by the keeper. Both teams continued to battle it out on the field but as the clock wound down, it looked like the game would have to be settled in additional time. Then, with less than nine minutes left in the game, Cornell was able to find a goal off a breakaway from a short goal kick to take the 1-0 lead at the 81:26 mark. Colgate attempted to find an equalizer with a series of late attempts on net but it was not enough, resulting in the team's third loss of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Grant Reed had two saves in the game for the Raiders while Cornell's Rick Pflasterer had two stops.

"It was a tough loss," stated head coach Erik Ronning. "We worked hard and played well. We will regroup and be ready for Army this weekend."

The Raiders will host Patriot League foe Army on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 4 p.m. at Van Doren Field. This game will be part of the team's alumni weekend and Colgate's homecoming weekend.
