HAMILTON, N.Y. (9/19/10) – The Colgate men's soccer team played its fifth overtime game of the season when it tied 1-1 with Binghamton in the final game of the Colgate Raider Adidas Classic this afternoon. The Raiders now have a record of 3-0-3 and are 2-0-3 in overtime play.
Colgate began the game playing defense against the Bearcats who continuously attacked the Raiders' goal, having a few great opportunities that they could not capitalize on. As the half continued, the pace of the game picked up as both teams began to play more physically, resulting in a series of fouls and two yellow cards being dished out by the referee.
The momentum carried into the second half of the game with the each team attacking its opponent's net aggressively. The score remained tied at 0-0 until the 66th minute when
Mike Reidy (Webster, N.Y.) picked up a rebound from the Bearcats' goalkeeper and volleyed the ball into the top of the net to score his second goal of the season. Binghamton answered back less than two minutes later when it found the back of the net from a corner kick to even the score once again at 1-1 and send the game into overtime.
The teams continued to battle it out on the field during the overtime periods and despite several close attempts neither one could score, forcing the game to end in a 1-1 draw.
"We did not play well this afternoon but much of that had to do with the quality of our opponent,” stated head coach
Erik Ronning. “Tomorrow will be a welcomed day off for the team and we will start preparing for our weekend game against Lehigh on Tuesday."
The team will open conference play at home next weekend when it hosts Lehigh on Friday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.on Van Doren Field for its first Patriot League game of the season.
