HAMILTON, N.Y. (12/04/10) – Despite making a comeback to hold the lead going into the final period, the Colgate women's hockey team could not hold off St. Lawrence as the Raiders suffered a tough 5-3 setback on Saturday afternoon in Starr Rink. Freshman

Colgate got off to a quick start in the first few minutes of the game, creating a series of opportunities, one of which was a shot by senior
Jessi Waters that hit the pipe. As the game progressed St. Lawrence began to attack the Raiders' net, and eventually found a goal at the 7:44 mark when Kelly Sabatine knocked a rebound into the net to give her team the 1-0 lead. The one-goal deficit did not deter Colgate, as the team continued to search for an equalizer. Success finally came at the 13:26 mark when Hootz picked up a pass from freshman
Taylor Volpe and fired the puck through traffic and into the net to tie the game at 1-1. Freshman
Jocelyn Simpson was also credited with an assist.
In the second period both teams came out looking to get the advantage. The Raiders struck first at the 01:23 mark when Walsh came up the end boards, cut to the middle and blasted the puck past Maxie Weisz to give Colgate the 2-1 lead. Sophomore
Jenna Klynstra and Waters were credited with the assists.The Raiders held the lead throughout most of the period until the Saints answered back at the15:04 mark to tie the game once again. The Raiders soon reclaimed the lead three minutes later. Pollock received the puck from
Amanda Kirwan and roofed it to give Colgate the 3-2 lead going into the final period.
In the third frame it was St. Lawrence that came out to the better start, finding two quick goals at the 04:04 and 04:34 marks from Michelle Ng and Kayla Sullivan to take the 4-3 lead. As the clock wound down, both teams picked up their intensity, causing the game to become more physical. The aggressive play soon led to a penalty shot for Colgate at the 09:59 mark when Rylee Smith was called for tripping Waters. However, the senior could not convert the shot, leaving the score at 4-3. The Saints then went on to score a final goal in the last few minutes of play to end the game with a 5-3 victory.
Junior
Kimberly Sass had 21 saves for the Raiders while Weisz had 22 for St. Lawrence.
Colgate will resume play on Jan. 3, 2011 when it travels to Syracuse for its final non-conference game of the season.
