The Colgate women's basketball team will open play on Cotterell Court this week when it hosts NJIT on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in its home opener, followed by Canisius on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m.
FIRST TWO GAMES
The Raiders are coming off a 66-56 setback to Siena on Monday night and a 59-47 loss to Rhode Island on Saturday. Sophomore guard
Jhazmine Lynch (San Diego, Calif.) led the team against the Rams with a game-high 18 points, three rebounds and three steals, while junior center
Tricia Oakes (Evergreen, Colo.) recorded her first double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
WHO'S HOT?
Oakes recorded a career-high 19 points against the Saints, surpassing her previous record of 16 points. She also matched her career high in rebounds (12), which she first accomplished in the 2008-09 season against Bryant.
Lynch also set a career record in steals with four against the Saints. She surpassed her previous record of three, which she had matched on several occasions last season and in the season opener against Rhode Island.
COURT LEADERS
Oakes and Lynch lead the team in scoring, averaging 15.0 and 14.5 points per game respectively. Senior forward
Krista Moser (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) leads the team in rebounds, averaging nine per game, and is followed by Oakes who has an 8.5 average.
THE SERIES
This will be the Raiders' second meeting with NJIT and the 34th with Canisius. The Highlanders lead the series 1-0 after defeating Colgate 52-41 in their first meeting last season in Newark N.J. The Griffins also lead the series, owning a 21-12 record against the Raiders. The teams last met on Nov. 12 2007, when Canisius defeated Colgate 78-33 in Buffalo, N.Y.
SCOUTING NJIT
The Highlanders (0-1) are coming of a 72-55 loss to Navy last weekend. The team, which was selected to finish sixth in the Great West Conference preseason poll, completed the 2009-10 season with a program Division I-best, 11 wins, last season.
NJIT is led by seniors Jessica Gerald and Ivana Seric. Gerald averaged 15.4 points per game last season and was selected to the GWC preseason first team while Seric, who received an honorable mention in the preseason poll, led the team in assists (90) and blocked shots (19).
SCOUTING CANISIUS
The Griffins (0-1) are coming off a 60-54 loss to Kent State on Friday. The team, which was picked to finish seventh in the MAAC preseason poll, will travel to Vestal, N.Y today (Nov. 16) for a matchup against Binghamton before facing the Raiders on Saturday.
Canisius is led by senior Micayla Drysdale, who is the program's all-time leader in 3-point field goal percentage (39.2). Named to the All-MAAC Third Team in the preseason poll, she is also the MAAC active's leader in career 3-pointers (153).
