Strong Paint Play Lifts Idaho Past Colgate

Eight Raiders totaled two or more points against Idaho

IRVINE, Calif. — On Friday, Colgate fell to Idaho 82–53 in a nonconference matchup at Bren Events Center.

Ella Meabon shot 10-for-10 from the free-throw line, but the Vandals' dominance in the paint, outscoring the Raiders 46–14, was a key factor in the game.

Of Colgate's 53 points, nine were second-chance points, 14 were in the paint, 20 were from the foul line, and 22 came from the bench.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first quarter opened with Meabon scoring a layup after Christina Midgette's steal, giving the Raiders an early 4–3 lead. The Vandals responded with a 3-pointer to take a brief lead. Despite a tight start that saw multiple lead changes and ties, Idaho pulled ahead midway through the quarter with a fast-break finish and two jumpers to lead 16–10. The Raiders attempted to close the gap with Tatiana Matthews scoring consecutive buckets, but the Vandals maintained control, ending the quarter with a 24–16 lead.

In a tightly contested quarter, Idaho outscored the Raiders 14–12. The Vandals initiated the quarter with a basket, but Meabon responded with a two-point jumper and converted four free throws, closing the gap, 26–20.

The Vandals took a 13-point lead from a quick 7-0 run. Kennedy Parrot and Meabon contributed six unanswered points from the foul line trailing 33–26. Despite the Raiders' efforts, including Parrott's jumper, Colgate entered halftime at a 10-point deficit, 38–28.

The Vandals outscored the Raiders by 14 in the third quarter, extending their lead to 25–11. Lara Cook, Grace Klag, and Laila Hankerson all contributed a bucket in the quarter, but Idaho's attack kept them at an advantage. Ella Mahaffey's late 3-pointer helped fuel the Raiders, but the Vandals maintained a hefty 63–39 lead.

Colgate's Midgette hit a jumper to start the fourth. The Vandals offense was slowed by the Raiders, as Colgate added three points from the foul line. The two teams traded points later in the quarter, but Idaho's early runs helped secure an 82–53 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Meabon, for the third time this season, was flawless from the foul line, shooting 10-for-10.
  • First-year players Ellie Cronin and Parrott recorded career bests in minutes played.
  • That was the first time the two teams had played. Idaho now holds a 1–0 lead in the all-time series.
