The second half of the ECAC Hockey schedule officially begins this weekend as Colgate will finish its regular season series with Clarkson and St. Lawrence, Friday and Saturday evening at Starr Rink.  The Raiders, 9-9-5 overall and 6-4-1 in league play, come into the weekend in a three-way tie for sixth in the ECAC Hockey standings with Rensselaer and Harvard.  Only four points separate first-place Union (17 points) and the three teams tied for sixth with 13 points.  In the second half of the league season, seven out of the next 11 league games will be played in Hamilton and including these two games, six of the remaining 11 will be televised games.  The Raiders are 2-0-1 in their last three games and that includes a 1-0-1 showing versus Robert Morris last weekend at Starr Rink.

MEET THE HEAD COACH
Don Vaughan is in his 17th year at the helm of the Colgate Raiders.  The 1984 graduate of St. Lawrence enters the campaign as the program's all-time winningest coach with a 278-262-64 mark.  On February 16, 2008, he became the all-time winningest coach with his 252nd victory as Colgate blanked Union 8-0.  On November 11, 2007, former Colgate President, Rebecca S. Chopp, announced the creation of the Donald F. Vaughan Endowed Coaching Chair for Men's Hockey.

THESE DATES IN COLGATE HISTORY
Colgate has a combined 15-9-1 all-time record in games played on January 29 and 30th.  The Raiders are 9-4 on the 29th and 6-5-1 the following evening.  This will mark only the third time Colgate has played in back-to-back games on these dates with the other two happening in 1988 and again in 1999.  Colgate split the 1988 weekend by beating Army 5-1 and then falling to Princeton 4-3.  The Raiders were swept in 1999 falling to Yale 5-1 and Princeton 2-1.  Colgate is 2-1 in games played against Clarkson on the 29th and 1-0 in games versus St. Lawrence on the 30th.

January 29, 1994  – Colgate broke open a 2-2 tie with five unanswered goals en route to a convincing 7-2 victory over St. Lawrence at Starr Rink.  Five Raiders tallied multi-point evenings in the victory over the Saints.  Bruce Gardiner posted a goal and three assists to lead the charge, while Ron Fogarty added two goals and a helper.  Earl Cronan was credited with the game winning goal 13 seconds into the second period.  Matt Weder saved 30 shots in the victory.

January 30, 2003 – Adam Mitchell scored at 3:11 in overtime to lead Colgate to a 2-1 victory over archrival Cornell in front of 2446 fans at Starr Rink.  After Big Red scored the opening goal at 1:48 of the first, the Raiders knotted the contest less than five minutes later on a power play goal by Dmitry Yashin.  Kyle Doyle finished with helpers on both Colgate goals.  Steve Silverthorn turned aside 31 shots in the victory.

THE SERIES RECORDS
Clarkson holds a comfortable 81-42-14 all-time record over Colgate.  However, in recent years, the Raiders have closed the gap.  In the last 13 meetings, Colgate is 5-2-6 versus the Golden Knights, including an earlier 6-2 victory at Cheel Arena two weeks ago.  The Raiders enter Friday's contest with a five-game unbeaten streak versus Clarkson (4-0-1). Three of the six ties in this stretch have ended in 1-1 draws.  The only 0-0 tie in the series happened on February 9, 2008 in Potsdam.  Clarkson is the team Colgate has played the most in its history.  This will be the 138th meeting between the two.  Cornell is second on the Raiders' list with 136 meetings.

While Colgate trails in the all-time series versus St. Lawrence 67-61-3, the Raiders are 36-25-2 all-time versus the Saints at Starr Rink.  Including play-off games, Colgate is 11-3 versus St. Lawrence at home in its last 14 meetings.  The Raiders will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak to St. Lawrence.  The last tie in the series came on January 24, 2003 as both teams battled to a 4-4 draw at Starr Rink.  Two of the three ties in the series have happened in Hamilton.
Colgate's last home weekend sweep of Clarkson/St. Lawrence occurred back in the 2005-06 season.  The Raiders downed the Golden Knights 4-3 and then prevailed over the Saints 4-3 in overtime on January 20-21.  Should Colgate win Friday evening versus Clarkson, it would be the first regular-season sweep against the Golden Knights since the 1999-2000 campaign, as the Raiders prevailed in both meetings (4-3 at Starr Rink  and 4-2 at Cheel Arena).

CLARKSON IN BRIEF
The Golden Knights head to Hamilton with a 5-16-3 overall mark, 1-9-2 in league action.  Clarkson is 0-4-1 in its last five games, including dropping a pair of 3-2 decisions last weekend to Yale and Brown.  The Golden Knights' offense features two 20-point scorers in senior Matt Beca (13-11-24) and junior Scott Freeman (5-15-20) while Brandon DeFazio (7-10-17) stands second on the squad in goal scoring.  In net, head coach George Roll has used two goalies with Paul Karpowich (4-11-3, 3.48) seeing most of the action.  Richie LaVeau (1-5-0, 3.21) made the last start against Colgate.  Colgate scored three unanswered goals late in the third period to break open a one-goal contest in a 6-2 victory over Clarkson at Cheel Arena, January 16.  Up 3-2, Thomas Larkin and David McIntyre scored goals 21 seconds apart to give the Raiders some breathing room.  McIntyre finished with two goals and an assist, while Matt Firman tallied his second multi-goal game of his career with two goals.  Clarkson outshot Colgate 29 to 27.  Alex Evin saved 27 shots in the victory.  The six goals scored served as the highest total for the Raiders against the Golden Knights since a 6-1 victory in Potsdam on November 15, 2003.

INTERESTING STAT VERSUS CLARKSON
Matt Firman has five career goals, three coming at the expense of Clarkson.  All three of those tallies were scored at Cheel Arena and against former Northwood School teammate Richie LaVeau.  The sophomore posted his first collegiate goal in Colgate's 3-1 victory last season on January 30.  He added two more scores in Colgate's 6-2 win two weeks ago in Potsdam.

HOME ICE ADVANTAGE?
In recent years, home ice advantage in the Clarkson vs. Colgate series has been somewhat non-existent.  While the Raiders have controlled the Golden Knights at Cheel Arena, Clarkson has won the head to head battles at Starr Rink.  The Golden Knights are 6-2-2 in the last 10 meetings in Hamilton.

ST. LAWRENCE IN BRIEF
The Saints, who are 13-8-4 overall and 7-3-2 in league action head into the weekend riding a five-game unbeaten streak.  Last weekend, St. Lawrence won a pair of game at home with 5-2 and 4-2 victories over Brown and nationally-ranked Yale respectively.  Ever since suffering a 10-1 loss to UMaine on November 28, the Saints are 6-2-3.  St. Lawrence possesses a balanced offensive attack with 11 players posting 10 or more points.  Senior Travis Vermeulen (11-13-24) leads the way with freshman Kyle Flanagan (5-14-19) and senior Mike McKenzie (5-13-18) rounding out the top three.  Between the pipes, three have stood this year for the Saints.  Senior Kain Tisi (7-3-2, 1.99) has taken over the go to goalie and is among the hottest netminders in the country.  He ranks fourth nationally in save percentage (.930) and fifth in goals against average (1.99).  Team National Rankings – Scoring Offense: 21st – 3.12; Scoring Defense – T27th – 2.80; Power Play – tied for 22nd - .200; Penalty Kill – 53rd - .759.

Seven current Raiders have scored at least one point in their respective careers versus St. Lawrence.  Leading the way with five points are Brian Day (3-2-5), David McIntyre (2-3-5), Jason Williams (2-3-5) and Kevin McNamara (1-4-5).  Ethan Cox (2-1-3), Wade Poplawski (1-0-1), and Corbin McPherson (0-1-1) round out the scoring against St. Lawrence.

LAST TIME VERSUS ST. LAWRENCE
St. Lawrence scored four times in the span of 7:29 of the third period in a 4-0 victory over Colgate, January 15 at Appleton Arena.  Mike McKenzie broke the 0-0 deadlock at 9:18 of the third.  It was the first time the Raiders had been shutout since a 1-0 defeat against Dartmouth November 21, 2009 at Starr Rink, a stretch of 47 games and the first time Colgate had been blanked on the road since a 1-0 loss to Clarkson on March 14, 2008 in the opening game of a three game set at Cheel Arena.  Charles Long made 22 saves for Colgate versus the Saints in the loss.

FAMILIAR FACES ON OPPOSING BENCHES
For the third week in a row, Colgate will square off against a very familiar face on the opposing bench.  Two Saturday's ago, the Raiders faced Greg Dreschel '88, who serves as an associate head coach at Clarkson.  The former standout ranks 24th on Colgate's all-time scoring list with 130 points.  The native of Bramalea, Ontario holds Colgate's single-season record for shorthanded goals in a season with eight set in 1986-87, three of which came against Rensselaer in one game.  Last weekend, Matt Nicholson '04 returned to Hamilton.  He is in his first year as an assistant at Robert Morris. The native of London, Ontario, played 123 games at defense for the Raiders and posted 12 points.  This weekend, Dreschel returns to Hamilton once again.

LAST WEEKEND IN BRIEF
Colgate snapped Robert Morris' four-game win streak with a 4-1 victory Friday evening. Jason Williams tied a career-high with a three-point evening with a goal and two assists, while Robbie Bourdon posted his second multi-point game of his career, including scoring the eventual game winner.  Up 2-1, Corbin McPherson gave Colgate its two-goal cushion back with his second career goal.  Ethan Cox finished off the scoring with an empty net goal with a minute left.  Alex Evin saved 25 of 26 shots in the victory.

Colgate rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the third period in a 3-3 draw with the Colonials Saturday.  Austin Smith scored on an extra attacker power play goal (6 on 4) with 49 seconds left in regulation.  Nick Prockow gave Colgate a 1-0 advantage in the first, however RMU scored three times in the matter of 7:30 in the second to take a 3-1 advantage.  Brian Day's 13th goal of the year from David McIntyre and Thomas Larkin shaved the deficit to 3-2.  Evin stopped 30 in the tie, including a breakaway with 6:20 left in regulation to keep the Raiders within shouting distance.  The weekend improved Colgate's record to 4-0-1 all-time against Robert Morris.

AUSTIN “EXTRA ATTACKER” SMITH
Austin Smith's
extra attacker goal with 49 seconds left versus Robert Morris was his third such goal of his career.  As a freshman, Smith scored two extra attacker goals in the closing minute to force overtime. On February 20, he scored at 19:21 of the third against Union to knot the game up at 2-2.  Two weeks later, Smith scored with 19 seconds left as Colgate rallied from two down in the closing moments to force overtime in a potential elimination game at Quinnipiac.  Smith would go on to score the game-winner less than a minute into overtime to force a third game in the opening round of the 2009 ECAC Hockey Tournament. Colgate has scored two extra attacker goals this season.  Before Smith, Corbin McPherson was the last to post such a goal for the Raiders this season at 2:28 of the third in a 5-3 victory at Brown on November 13, 2009.

WHO'S HOT
In their last eight games, both Austin Smith (2-9-11) and Brian Day (4-6-10) have posted double figured point totals.  David McIntyre has posted five points on two goals and three assists in his last three games.  Thomas Larkin (1-2-3) has a point in his last three outings.  For the first time in his collegiate career, Corbin McPherson posted points in consecutive games versus Clarkson and Robert Morris.  He has a goal and an assist in his hast three games.

POINT PER GAME SMITTY
Heading into this weekend, Austin Smith is averaging a point per game in his career.  The sophomore has played in 60 games and has 27 goals and 33 assists thus far in his career.  Smith has 14 multi-point games in his career, including two four-point performances to his credit – one versus Quinnipiac last year and a four-assist evening at Canisius on December 20, 2009.

EVIN STEVEN:  Alex Evin is 2-0-1 in his last three starts between the pipes for Colgate.  During this stretch, he has posted 86 saves in 92 shots thrown his way for a .9348 save percentage.  His goals against average has dipped from 3.48 to 3.02 with his last three performances.

LENDING A HELPING HAND
Colgate is one of five schools to have two players ranked among the top 20 nationally in assists per game.  Heading into the series with Clarkson and St. Lawrence, Austin Smith is 14th overall, averaging 0.83 helpers per outing, while David McIntyre is tied for 18th, averaging 0.77 assists per game.    The other schools to have two represented include Minnesota-Duluth, Canisius, Wisconsin and Yale. Smith ranks second in the ECAC Hockey with 19 assists, while McIntyre is right behind the sophomore in third.

PASSING THE CENTURY MARK
With his career-high four-point evening versus Harvard, David McIntyre became the 48th player in the program's history to surpass the 100-point milestone.  He heads this weekend's play versus Clarkson and St. Lawrence with 117 career points, which stands 30th all-time.  He needs two points to pass Rick Mirabelli for 29th overall and five points to bypass Larry Gibson and move into 28th.

FREE WILLIE
With his two appearances versus Robert Morris, Jason Williams has moved into a tie for 12th with Dave Thomas on the all-time games played list at Colgate with 140 appearances.  With two more outings, he will tie Tom Riley and Jesse Winchester for eighth on the career list.  David McIntyre has moved into the all-time top 15 with 138 games, which is tied for 15th with Cory Murphy, Etienne Morin and Kyle Doyle.  Ethan Cox, who has played in 137 games, will move into the top 15 with two more games played. Tyler Burton holds the all-time record with 158 games played.

RELATIVA ALL'ELENCO (On the list in Italian)
With his goal versus Clarkson, freshman Thomas Larkin moved onto the all-time top 10 list for goals scored by a blueliner in his rookie season.  His two goals tied him with 12 others for eighth on the single season list.  Current Raider Kevin McNamara is among the group with Larkin as he posted two goals during the 2007-08 season.  Larkin, who has 13 points on the season, is three points away from tying Lennox Sterling, Steve Poapst and Mike Campaner for eighth on the single season point list for a rookie defenseman and is only two assists from moving into a tie for seventh on the all-time rookie defenseman lists for helpers in a season.

FRESHMEN IMPACT
After 23 games, the Colgate freshmen have integrated themselves rather well as far as posting points. Including a combined six points in the weekend versus Robert Morris, the freshman class has posted 46 points, or two points per game (15 goals, 31 assists. Earlier, there was a four-game stretch where a freshman collected his first collegiate goal of his career. Kurtis Bartliff netted his first goal in the 1-1 tie with nationally ranked Nebraska-Omaha, while Christian Long found the back of the next the following night against the Mavericks. Against UMass-Lowell, it was Robbie Bourdon's turn to light the lamp and then it was Jeremy Price opening the scoring versus Army.  Defenseman Thomas Larkin (2-9-13) and Bourdon (5-8-13) lead the charge for the first year players.

DIGGING OUT OF A HOLE
When Colgate rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period to battle to a 3-3 tie with Robert Morris, Saturday evening, it wasn't the first time the Raiders have battled back from a more than one goal deficit in the final period.  In the second opener, Colgate posted a 4-4 tie at Niagara after trailing by as many as three late in the second period.  On November 6, Colgate posted a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Harvard after trailing the Crimson 4-1 at the start of the third period.

STREAKING RAIDERS
The 2009-2010 season has seen the Raiders either continue old streaks or put together new ones.

Went into overtime in the season-opener at Niagara to continue streak dating back to last season of eight consecutive overtime appearances.

First three games were determined by a goal or less to increase the consecutive streak to 14 consecutive dating back to last season.

Had a six-game unbeaten streak from October 30-November 20 going 4-0-2.

Posted three goals or more in nine consecutive games from October 23-November 24.

Had a power play goal in nine-consecutive games from October 30-December 4

Had a streak of nine consecutive games in which at least one Raider posted a multi-point game from October 30-December 4.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT
Freshman Jeremy Price was one of four rookies nationally to gain honorable mention rookie of the month honors by the Hockey Commissioner's Association for the month of December.  The defenseman tallied two goals in three games, both coming in an overtime loss to Canisius.  He became the first defenseman to net two goals in the same game since Jason Fredricks on January 8, 2009 in a 5-4 overtime victory over Lake Superior State

45th IS GOOD IN THIS INSTANCE
Colgate is ranked 45th in the nation averaging 12.3 penalty minutes per game.  Alaska remains the least penalized school in the country at 10.1, while its rival to the south, Alaska Anchorage posts on average 21.1, which is the most in the nation.

PENALTY KILL SHOWING IMPROVEMENT
After allowing five goals in 11 penalty kills in two games to Notre Dame and Niagara to kick off the New Year at the Shillelagh Tournament in Chicago, Colgate has settled down to kill off 17 of its last 20 in its last four games versus St. Lawrence, Clarkson and Robert Morris.

HITTING 1,000
With his 16-save performance versus Notre Dame, Charles Long became the 17th goalie in Colgate history to reach 1,000 career saves.  The senior posted 22 saves versus St. Lawrence to up his total to 1,058 for his career.

HIGHEST TWO-GAME OUTPUT
Colgate scored 11 goals in its last two games before the Christmas break versus Rensselaer and Canisius.  It was the highest two-goal output since the Raiders outscored Rensselaer and Union 12-0 at home February 15-16, 2008.  It's the highest two-game scoring output away from Starr Rink since the 2003-04 season, December 12 and 28th when Colgate posted 11 goals at Sacred Heart and against Northeastern in the first round of the Rensselaer Holiday Tournament in Troy, N.Y.

EVIN SAYS NO SOUP FOR MV-T
In Colgate's 3-1 loss at Union, Alex Evin stopped Mario Valery-Trabucco on a penalty shot in the second period.  It was the first penalty shot against Colgate since March 19, 2004 when former Raider standout Steve Silverthorn stopped Clarkson's Chris Blight in an ECAC Hockey semifinal match-up.  The opposition has only scored three times in nine tries against Colgate goalies – the last coming on January 4, 2003 as Randy Jones beat Silverthorn in a 6-0 Raider loss.

RPI OUTBURST
Colgate's five-goal outburst was the most goals scored by the Raiders against the Engineers since a 5-4 victory at Starr Rink back on February 18, 2000.  The performance also served as the most goals scored by Colgate at Rensselaer in close to 15 years.  The Raiders posted a 6-3 win at Houston Fieldhouse on January 16, 1995.

40 SOMETHING ON SATURDAYS
In back-to-back Saturday performances against Yale (11/14) and Princeton (11/21), Colgate goalies posted 40 or more saves.  On November 14, Charles Long saved a career-high 41 shots in a 3-3 tie with the then 11th-ranked Bulldogs.  The following Saturday, Alex Evin bested his former career-high of 41 set last season with a 43-save performance in a 5-4 overtime victory against the Tigers at Starr Rink,  In the opening Saturday of league play, Long tallied 38 saves in a victory over Dartmouth (11/7).

DOUBLE BIG MAC
For the second time in three weeks, Colgate's David McIntyre was named as the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week on November 23.  The senior posted two goals and three assists on the weekend versus Quinnipiac and Princeton.  On November 9, he was honored with the recognition for the first time this season after tallying a five-point weekend in a sweep of Harvard and Dartmouth.  In the opening game that weekend, McIntyre posted a career-high four-point outing (a goal and three assists) as Colgate overcame a 4-1 third-period deficit to down the Crimson 5-4.  He scored a goal the following evening in a 3-2 win over Dartmouth.  That same day, teammate Thomas Larkin was named the league's rookie of the week.  He posted two points on the weekend, both coming versus Harvard (one goal, one assist).  It was his first multi-point game of his career.

FIRST WEEKEND SWEEP IN A WHILE
When Colgate downed Harvard and Dartmouth to open its 2009-2010 ECAC Hockey slate, it was the first four-point weekend since February 15-16, 2008 when the Raiders blanked Rensselaer 4-0 and Union 8-0.  Colgate's last non-conference weekend sweep was over Robert Morris on December 1-2, 2007.

 HOLIDAY DRIVE A SUCCESS
Ethan Cox's canned food and toy drive from November 21st's clash with Princeton was a major success.  The senior spearheaded a dual drive for the first time and raised over 1,000 pounds of food, 150 toys, and $650, which will go along way in providing holiday cheer to families in the greater Hamilton Area.  The food items will help restock the supply at the Hamilton Food Cupboard, while the toys will be given to the Holiday Interfaith Council.  Last year's drives raised 350 pounds of food, 200 toys and $1,007 in cash over two separate weekends.

A RECAP OF THE OVERTIME STREAK
Colgate entered the 2009-2010 campaign having played seven consecutive overtime games, which dated back to the end of 2008-09 season.  The Raiders went 3-2-2 down the stretch in these games – the two losses coming to Quinnipiac in a best of three series in a first round ECAC Hockey Tournament clash in Hamden, Conn.  The streak began at home with a 2-2 tie versus Union on February 20.  Colgate would go on to beat Rensselaer (2-1); tie Brown 3-3 in Providence and then upset #11 Yale (3-2) in front of a national TV audience in New Haven all before the meetings with the Bobcats.  Quinnipiac won the opener 3-2; then Colgate rallied from a two-goal deficit late in the game for a 5-4 victory to force a third game.  The Bobcats prevailed 4-3 in the final game of the series.  The Raiders stretched the streak to eight with a 4-4 tie at Niagara last Friday evening, but was broken the following night in a 3-2 regulation victory at RIT. It was Colgate's first regulation victory since a 1-0 defeat of Dartmouth on Valentines Day at Thompson Arena.

SHOULD OVERTIME HAPPEN
If it happens, eyes need to focus on two of Colgate's best ever goal scorers in overtime in David McIntyre and Austin Smith.  McIntyre is tied for second all-time with three overtime game winners.  He needs one more to tie Jon Smyth for first.  One of McIntyre's goals lifted Colgate by Clarkson in the third and final game of an ECAC Hockey quarterfinal as the Raiders advanced to the Final Four as the seventh seed.  Smith is tied for sixth having scored two overtime winners as a freshman last season versus Lake Superior State and Quinnipiac.  McIntyre has six overtime points (3 goals, 3 assist) and five of them came last season.  The only game he didn't record a point in a game winner in overtime was Colgate's 5-4 victory over Quinnipiac in the second game of the three-game series.

PRESEASON HONORS
David McIntyre has been named a pre-season first team all-ECAC Hockey honoree by the coaches and media.  In addition, the senior has been named as a preseason first team all-American by Inside College Hockey and once again named to the all-College Hockey News first team.  In 2008-09, McIntyre finished with 21 goals and 43 points, both ranked among the leaders nationally.  His point total was the highest for a single season since Andy McDonald's 58 in 1999-2000.  He was a first team all-league honoree; a finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, a first team AHCA/Reebok Eastern All-American, a first team all-American by Inside College Hockey and was a selection to the all-College Hockey News team.  In addition, McIntyre is one of 20 candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for men's ice hockey.

GETTING DRAFTY
Colgate has six NHL draft picks on its 2009-2010 roster.  David McIntyre was drafted in the fifth round of the 2006 Draft by the Dallas Stars.  Last year, his rights were traded twice in two months and now stands property of the New Jersey Devils.  Corbin McPherson (New Jersey, 3rd, 2007), Brian Day (New York Islanders, 6th, 2006), Austin Smith (Dallas Stars, 5th, 2007), Jeremy Price (Vancouver Canucks, 4th, 2009), and Thomas Larkin (Columbus Blue Jackets, 5th, 2009) round out the Raiders' draft picks.

BLUELINE SHUFFLE
Colgate will have a revamped defense for the 2009-2010 season.  Don Vaughan's squad lost five defensemen to graduation that combined to play close to 600 collegiate games.  With the return of Corbin McPherson, Wade Poplawski and Kevin McNamara, the Raiders have 132 games of collegiate experience.  Newcomers will need to make an impact on the blueline this season.

OH BROTHER
Charles and Christian Long are the first set of brothers to play for Don Vaughan at the same time.   They hail from Cleveland Heights, Ohio and played junior hockey for the Brockville Braves of the CJHL.  Charles and Christian have played three years together at different levels including helping St. Edwards High School to an Ohio State High School title.
