Raiders Fall Short at UMass

AMHERST, Mass. (9/29/09) -   The Colgate men's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss to the University of Massachusetts on Tuesday afternoon at Ruggs Field in Amherst, Mass.

The Minutemen were able to build an early lead, putting the Raiders in a tight spot on both the offensive and defensive ends of the field.

Just over 11 minutes into the game, UMass earned a corner kick which would set-up their first goal.  With a flurry of action in front of the goal following the corner kick, UMass' Dominic Skrajewski was able to gain control of the ball and put it just inside the left post, giving the Minutemen their first goal of the game.

About five minutes later, UMass picked up their second goal off a penalty kick from Bryant Craft, giving the home team a 2-0 advantage in the 17th minute of play.  Their final goal of the first half and the game came just over ten minutes later as Mark DeSantis knocked in a header off a cross from Stuart Amick.

The Raider defense stepped it up in the second half, allowing the Minutemen to get just four shots throughout the second session, and only one on goal. Despite the difference in scoring, Colgate's shot total fell just shy of the UMass', 11-8.

Junior goalkeeper Max Krasilovsky-Revell (Marlborough, Mass.) started between the posts for the Raiders and was relieved bye sophomore Colin Prather (Missoula, Mont.) for the second half of play. Prather, a second-year transfer, had one save in his debut as a Raider.

UMass goalie Chris Piekos, the nation's leader in save percentage, had three saves for the Minutemen.

The men will next take on Patriot League foe, Holy Cross on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 3 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.
