HAMILTON, N.Y. (4/11/09) – Junior Jesse McCarrick (Oak Hill, VA) pitched a two-hit shutout in the opener, and picked up a save in the nightcap, to lead the Colgate softball team to a doubleheader sweep over Bucknell in Patriot League action Saturday afternoon at the Eaton Street Field.
Colgate, which has won six straight games, won the opener 7-1, before taking a slugfest in the nightcap, 14-13. The Raiders are 17-10 overall and 7-3 in the Patriot League while Bucknell falls to 13-23 and 4-6.
The doubleheader featured the hitting of senior second baseman Tiana Tyeskey (Granite Bay, CA), who went 4-for-8 with three home runs and nine runs batted in. Tyeskey won the second game with a three-run homer in the sixth as Colgate rallied for the victory.
In the opener, McCarrick allowed only two singles in the fifth inning en route to her eighth victory of the season. She struck out seven and walked one. McCarrick moved into tenth place in career strikeouts with 105 for the Raiders.
Colgate took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, when catcher Nicole Siedhof (Canton, PA) hit a home run over the left centerfield fence. In the third inning, the Raiders increased their lead to 2-0 on a RBI triple by Calla Yee (Salinas, CA), scoring freshman shortstop Jennifer Ortega (Aberdeen, NJ), who had walked.
The Raiders put the contest away with five runs in the sixth inning. Tyeskey had a two-run homer, while freshman outfielder Stephanie Hartquist (Homer, NY) had a RBI double, and Ortega drilled a RBI single. Colgate's other run scored on a wild pitch.
Siedhof finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI, while Tyeskey had two RBI.
In the nightcap, Colgate jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings with Tyeskey hitting a two-run homer in the first inning, and Erin Gomez (Lawrenceville, NJ) following with a three-run shot for a 5-0 lead. The Raiders added three runs in the second inning on a RBI single by Ashley Rowe (Tampa, FL) and two-run single by Amanda Eccleston (Roseville, CA).
The Bison rallied for eight runs in the third inning to tie the contest with Jessie Snyder hitting a two-run homer, and Cassie Lloyd following with a grand slam home run. Colgate came right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning for a 10-8 lead on a two-run single by Tyeskey.
Bucknell tied the game in the fifth inning with two runs, before moving ahead 13-10 with a three-run sixth inning. Colgate, however, scored four times in the sixth inning for the victory. Ortega drove in the first run with a single, before Tyeskey hit a three-run homer over the left centerfield fence for the winning runs.
McCarrick came in to pitch the seventh inning for the Raiders, and shut the door on the Bison for her first save of the year. Lacy Ver Steeg (Elk Grove, CA) was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Michelle Hollebeke (North Reading, MA).
Tyeskey was 3-for-5 with seven RBI and two runs scored, while Yee was 2-for-4, Rowe 3-for-5, Siedhof 2-for-3 and Eccleston 2-for-3.
Colgate and Bucknell will close out their four-game series on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 12 noon.
