HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/6/09) - The Colgate men's soccer team extend their home unbeaten streak to 10 games after finishing in a 0-0 tie, after 110 minutes of play, against Hartwick this evening at Van Doren Field.
Play was back-and-forth throughout much of the game with the Raiders barely edging out Hartwick in shots 17-15, while the Hawks led in corner kicks 9-4.
The anticipation grew in the second half as both teams got several good looks on goal, but were unable to produce points. Colgate got four great looks on goal starting just under 20 minutes into the second half. Freshman
Mike Garzi (New Milford, Conn.) blasted a shot toward the upper half of the net, but Hartwick's Jeremy Vuolo jumped up, touching the crossbar, to tip the ball up and over the net.
This however, set up a corner kick for the Raiders, which Garzi took and served out to the center of the box.
Paul Visgilio (West Hartford, Conn.) gained control of the ball and shot it just inches wide of the near post.
The Hawks retaliated with just over 10 minutes left in the half, getting their best look to score of the half. Hartwick's Cleyon Brown sent a cross into the box sending a flurry of Colgate and Hartwick players into action. After several Colgate attempts to clear the ball out of the box, the Hawks' Dan Summers came up with the ball and got off a shot from less than 10 yards out but it went just high.
The Raiders had the best opportunity to score in the first overtime session as freshman
Shane Conlin (Randolph, N.J.) slipped behind two defenders to gain control of a cross, sending his shot just inches wide of the far post.
Senior
Alex Weekes (Stroudsburg, Pa.) had Colgate's only shot in the second overtime period, coming in the first minute of play. Rookie
Mike Reidy (Webster, N.Y.) got around a Hartwick defender to send a pass into the box. Conlin dribbled the ball to Weekes, directly in front of the goalie, but his shot just missed the far post.
Hartwick responded with two shots on goal, one coming less than a minute after Weekes' attempt as the Hawks offense earned a three-on-two in front of the Colgate net. Nick Roydhouse took the shot for Hartwick, but Colgate's
Colin Prather (Missoula, Mont.) was there for the easy save.
The Hawks last opportunity to end the game came with just under four minutes remaining in the final overtime period. Brian Gordon had a hard shot on goal sail just wide as Prather dove to make a save. Carson Pryde picked up the rebound and got off a shot from inside the box just as Prather was recovering, making the save.
Prather finished with five saves in his first career start as a Raider. Vuolo made four saves for Hartwick.
The Raiders will next host Patriot League opponent Army this Saturday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. The Colgate men's soccer team will also hold their annual Alumni Weekend this Friday-Sunday.
