HAMILTON, N. Y. (10/30/09) - The Colgate men's soccer team shutout Patriot League opponent Navy, 2-0 on Friday evening at Van Doren Field. The Raiders improve to 7-8-1 overall and 3-3-0 in conference play, while Navy falls to 8-9-0 and 2-4-0 in the league.
After a back-and-forth first half, the two teams entered the half-time break tied at 0-0. The Raiders outshot the Midshipmen during the first stanza, 5-2, but were edged out in overall shots 10-9.
Freshman
Mike Reidy (Webster, N.Y.) was the first to score, tallying the game-winning goal at 65:37 in the second half. Seniors
Chris Ross (Hurst, Texas) and
Alex Weekes (Stroudsburg, Pa.) each collected an assist on the play. After receiving a cross from Weekes, Ross spotted Reidy wide open near the left post. The senior midfielder passed the ball to the current Colgate goal leader who sent his shot sailing past a diving Tyler Bristol and into the far corner of the net.
Ross also had a hand in the Raiders second goal of the night, less than three minutes later with exactly 22 minutes left in the game. Ross again sent a cross into the box to junior
Jeff Leach (New Canaan, Conn.), whose shot was tipped by Navy's Bristol, but still found the back of the net.
Junior goalkeeper
Chris Miller (Dallas, Texas) had four saves to earn his first shutout of the season while improving his record to 5-4-0 overall. Bristol had one save for Navy in just over 70 minutes of play, before being relieved by Will Craven.
The Raiders will wrap up their regular season schedule when they travel to Washington D.C., to take on American University. The Eagles are currently the only team to secure a spot in the Patriot League Tournament so far this year. Colgate will face American on Saturday, Nov. 7th at 1 p.m.
