EASTON, PA. – Colgate's
Alex Weekes (Stroudsburg, Pa.) scored his fifth goal of the season in the 88
th minute to lift the Raiders men's soccer team past Patriot League foe Lafayette, 2-1, tonight in Easton, Pa.
Even though, the Raiders controlled possession for most of the first half, the Leopards struck first at the 22
nd minute mark, when Sean Peckham beat Raider goalkeeper
Chris Miller (Dallas, Texas) on a penalty kick, giving the home team an early lead. Colgate out-shot Lafayette 9-2 in the first 45 minutes, forcing keeper Andrew Pianko to make six saves, while other than the goal, Miller wasn't tested at all.
The Raiders continued pressure in the second half and finally capitalized in the 76
th minute, when
Jeff Leach (New Canaan, Conn.) played a ball in to
Mike Reidy (Webster, N.Y.), who buried it in the back of the net, evening the score at one apiece. The goal was the freshman's fifth of the season and Leach's third assist.
Leach wasn't done putting his name on the score sheet, as he found a streaking Weekes on a long cross, cutting in front of the cage. The senior had no problem touching it into the cage beating Pianko to give the Raiders the win.
The victory gives the Raiders a 6-6-1 overall record and a 2-2-0 mark in Patriot League play. The squad will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 20, when they travel to Princeton, N.J. to take on the Tigers. That game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
