HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/10/09) – Colgate freshman
Shane Conlin (Randolph, N.J.) found the back of the net twice, including the game-winner to push the Raiders past Army, 4-2, at Van Doren Field.
The Raiders controlled the early portion of the first half, maintaining possession and earning the first quality scoring opportunity of the game. In just the third minute,
Alex Weekes (Stroudsburg, Pa.) got a shot off from 25 yards out, but Army goalkeeper Nick Alexander made the diving save.
Weekes found the back of the net in the 28th minute after freshman
Mike Reidy (Webster, N.Y.) played a high through ball down the middle of the field, which Weekes took off his chest to edge past the lone defender and bury a shot into the left side of the net. The senior would have two more chances in the first half, missing a shot just wide and a header which Alexander saved.
The Black Knights would even the score just three and a half minutes later when they were awarded a penalty kick after a player was taken down in the box. Senior Bryan Connolly placed the shot just passed the hands of a stretched out
Grant Reed (Petoskey, Mich.) to put Army on the scoreboard.
Colgate took the lead back late in the first half, when Weekes made a crisp pass to Conlin who took on the defender on the left side one-on-one. The freshman used his speed to gain a step on the Army defense and blasted a shot into the far side of the cage, giving the Raiders a 2-1 lead going into the half.
Both teams played a fast-paced possession game to start the second half, and it was Conlin again who earned the first scoring chance of the half, when his left footed shot from just inside the 18-yard box dribbled just inches wide of the post.
Army would have its own close-call minutes later, when Peter Campbell picked up a loose ball in the box and blasted a shot on net, forcing Reed to make a clutch save and keeping the Raiders on top.
The Black Knights got back into the game with 17 minutes left after a long cross by Mitch Johnson found Campbell in the box and the senior slipped it past Reed to even the match at two apiece.
The Raiders dominated the latter half of the second frame, scoring two goals in four minutes to seal the victory. In the 77th minute, it was Conlin who made a quick near post run and
Mike Garzi (New Milford, Conn.) found him off a corner kick. Conlin's header snuck just inside the post for his second goal of the game and his third of the season.
Minutes later, off another Garzi corner kick, Reidy got his head on the ball and placed it in the cage for his team high fifth goal of the year. The two quick goals put the Black Knights out of range and gave Colgate its fifth win of the season. The Raiders now move to 5-5-1, while Army falls to 1-9-0.
The Raider will be back in action on Tuesday, when they travel to Ithaca, N.Y., to face the Big Red of Cornell. Game time for that match is slated for 7:00 p.m.
