Colgate Swimmers Split at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y.   (1/17/09) –  The Colgate women flexed their muscles in the final two events to pull out a 169-129 victory over arch-rival Cornell, Saturday afternoon in women's swimming action at Teagle Pool.  The Big Red prevailed 179-102 in men's action.

Emily Murphy (Syracuse, N.Y.) led a one-two-three sweep in the 200 breast.  The senior won the event with a time of 2:08.68, while Erin McGraw (Penfield, N.Y.) and Caren Guyett (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) finished second and third respectively with times of 2:10.09 and 2:11.09.

The Raiders, who improved to 6-0 overall, then pulled away more by taking the first two places in the final event, the 400 free relay.  Kim Siembedia (Narbeth, Pa.), Lisa Marchi (Scottsdale, Ariz.), Ashley Bottger (Weston, Conn.) and Sarah Sciarrino (Buffalo, N.Y.) posted a winning time of 3:35.20 ahead of the foursome of Caitlin Dwyer (Hicksville, N.Y.), Erica Derlath (Garden City, N.Y.), Bev Walker (Marietta, Ga.) and Murphy who touched in 3:37.38.

Colgate took the top two spots in five other races.  Guyett (10:37.96) and Bottger (10:48.51) placed one-two respectively in the 1000 free, while Bottger (52.34) and McGraw (53.86) were the top two spots in the 100 free.  Emily Peck (Brooktondale, N.Y.) and Caitlin Curran (Alpharetta, Ga.) went one-two in the 100 breast with times of 1:08.34 and 1:08.83, while Curran and Betsy Fischer (Upper Nyack, N.Y.) posted times of 2:27.55 and 2:31.51 respectively to claim the top two spots in the 200 breast.  Jenna Daly (Garden City, N.Y.) and Erika Mortenson (Chesterfield, Mo.) finished one-two in the 500 free with times of 5:13.55 and 5:18.72.

Walker, Curran, McGraw and Siembedia gave Colgate the lead in the opening event as the foursome won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:50.70.  The other two victories came from Derlath, who won the 200 free (1:54.49) and 200 back (2:07.25).

In men's competition, Devon Healy (New Canaan, Conn.) got first place points in both the 500 free (4:53.55) and 400 IM (4:22.14) and Costas Hadjipateras (New Canaan, Conn.) received first-place points in the 100 fly (53.62).

The Raider men received second place effort from Hadjipateras in the 200 fly (1:55.40).

Both teams return to action next Saturday afternoon as they host Binghamton in their final home meet of the year.  The clash begins at noon at Lineberry Natatorium.
