Colgate Collects 3-1 Win Over Holy Cross

Raiders split weekend with 1-1 record

WORCESTER, Mass. – Major defensive efforts aided the Raiders' success as Colgate defeated Holy Cross 3-1 at Hart Center Arena.

Junior libero Hannah Langton posted a career-high 29 digs to help the Raiders rally and earn gritty points. The team totaled 18 blocks. Stella Labrecque led the way with seven, including one solo block and six block assists, while Jordyn Moore contributed six block assists.

"It was another good response after a tough loss. Each match takes on a whole new life and this one our team defense really stepped up. League road wins are tough to come by and this win was a testament to our upperclass leadership.

"I'm excited to get back to work on Monday and prepare for two more tough road matches."

MOMENTS OF THE MATCH
  • Colgate jumped out to a gaping 9-2 lead in the first set, including kills from Tiana Owens and Moore and two service aces from Langton.
  • The Crusaders climbed out of a deep deficit to even the set at 13-13.
  • Offensive momentum favored the Raiders as Colgate outscored Holy Cross 12-5.
  • Back-to-back Raider blocks and four kills from Morgan Reese helped Colgate take the first set, 25-18.
  • Holy Cross started the second set with a 5-1 advantage, but Reese and Julia Headley each registered a pair of blocks to help Colgate cut the deficit to 6-5.
  • Reese paved the way offensively for the Raiders, helping them earn four straight points to tie the set at 9-9.
  • In a contested second set, the Crusaders pulled away late, stringing together five points to take a 21-18 lead.
  • The Raiders rallied to tie the set at 21-21 and force a set point off Owens' service ace, but the Crusaders earned five set points before capitalizing on the fifth attempt to win 30-28.
  • Colgate, with urgency to start the third set, led 9-4 behind two service aces from Headley.
  • The Crusaders slowed the Raiders' run, but a block and two kills from Owens pushed Colgate to a 13-5 advantage.
  • Holy Cross gave chase, scoring 10 points to cut the deficit to 18-15, but six consecutive points from Colgate and a Crusader service error helped the Raiders take the third set, 25-16, and go up 2-1 in the match.
  • Once again, Colgate jumped out in front, capitalizing on Crusader attacking errors to take a 7-3 lead.
  • Holy Cross earned gritty points to take its first lead of the set, 15-14.
  • The Raiders strung together five straight points to regain the edge, 19-15.
  • In a battle until the end, Holy Cross cut the deficit to two at 22-20, but the final kill from Moore and a block by Labrecque gave Colgate the 25-21 set win and a 3-1 victory.
NOTES
  • Langton posted a career-high 29 digs and has recorded 20 or more digs in six different matches.
  • The Raiders extended their winning streak over the Crusaders to 16 matches.
  • Reese finished the match with 15 kills, marking the first time she has led the team in kills in a match this season.
