Field Hockey Falls Short to Rutgers, 3-1

First Meeting Between the Two Teams

HAMILTON – After a slow-starting first half, Colgate generated eight penalty corners against Rutgers but ultimately fell, 3-1, to the Scarlet Knights.



MOMENTS OF THE MATCH
  • Colgate created a defensive battle for Rutgers in the first quarter, limiting the Scarlet Knights' opportunities on net.
  • Rutgers capitalized on a penalty corner in the 11th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
  • In the second quarter, Morgan Willis had the first offensive attempt for the Raiders in the 24th minute, but the Scarlet Knights' goalkeeper made the save.
  • Rutgers managed to create five shots and netted its second goal of the game in the 28th minute, taking a 2-0 lead into halftime.
  • Coming out of the half, the Raiders scored off their first penalty corner of the match. Lauren Widdowson inserted the ball to Aiden Cronk, who dished it off to Willis, who found Widdowson at the back post for the goal, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
  • The Raiders went on to create four more penalty corner opportunities in the third quarter but could not convert any of them. 
  • Kennedy Glinn made three saves in the third quarter to keep the game within reach.
  • Colgate generated three more penalty corners in the fourth quarter but was unable to find the back of the net on any attempts.
  • Rutgers gave itself a buffer late in the fourth quarter, scoring on a solo attempt in the 48th minute to ultimately win, 3-1.
NOTES
  • This was the first time the two teams had faced each other in program history.
  • Widdowson scored her second goal of the season. Her other goal came against Lock Haven (Sept. 11).
  • First-year Oliva Milia registered her first collegiate defensive save.
UP NEXT
  • The Raiders will finish out the month of September on the road in Bethlehem, Pa., to face Lehigh on Saturday, with a noon start time.
