Poppinga earns first clean sheet of season

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Bianca Howitt's strike inside nine minutes was enough to give Colgate its first victory of the season on a rainy night against Marist on Thursday. Ella Poppinga finished with five saves to keep her first clean sheet of the season.

COACH HOKANSON'S COMMENTS
"Happy to come away with our first win of the season. Today was a day that required more grit and fortitude than it did necessarily technique or tactics from either team. The weather didn't lend itself to much playing, but credit to our players for continuing to try to find moments of quality. I felt that we generated some good moments in the attack and were unlucky not to come away with another goal or two, but won't take anything away from Marist who also generated some high quality chances in transition. They made it really hard for us so tons of credit to them in the way they pressed and defended. Pleased to come away with a win on the tail end of a challenging road swing, looking forward to getting back on Beyer-Small."

MOMENTS OF THE GAME

Ella Poppinga was forced into action early with a save inside the first minute of the match.
Bianca Howitt found a loose ball on the top of the 18-yard box and fired toward the net but the Marist goalkeeper was able to keep it out.
Moments later, Howitt was fed a cross from Regan Taylor and slotted it into the top right corner to give Colgate the early 1-0 lead.
Both teams traded half-chances throughout the remainder of the first half but Colgate maintained the 1-0 lead.
Midway through the second half, Ava McCloskey was taken down in the box but after video review the referee decided not to award a penalty.
Marist was able to find space on the right side and skip a shot off the wet surface that just passed the Colgate post.
The Red Foxes continued to apply pressure throughout the latter stages of the match but the Raiders stood tall and earned a hard fought 1-0 win.

NOTES

Poppinga earned her first clean sheet of the season with a five-save performance.
Howitt scored her first goal since Sept. 20, 2025. Howitt now has three career goals.
Sophia Ro remained the log outfield player to finish with all 90 minutes played.
Regan Taylor and Ava McCloskey logged assists on the Howitt goal. They now equal Jade Vieira with one assist on the season.
