Hess continues winning ways in losses

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PENNSYLVANIA Women's tennis competed in two hard-fought matches but fell, 5–2, to Duquesne on Friday, followed by a 6–1 loss to St. Francis on Saturday.

COLGATE 2 - 5 DUQUESNE
The Colgate women's tennis team travelled to Duquesne to take on the Dukes, where they fell 5-2 in a tightly contested match.

"It's obviously tough to come up short in the overall result, but I loved our energy from beginning to end," said head coach Damien Prohaska. "We had a great presence in doubles, we were aggressive with our movement, and each match could have gone either way. Certainly many positives to take from singles, as well, but we needed a greater amount of patience in most matches. Duquesne was steady and didn't give many free points. Credit to them, but certainly a major point of reflection for us moving forward. Overall, happy with our effort as a team and excited to see what we bring tomorrow at Saint Francis. Another great challenge that I know we'll be ready for."

The contest began with doubles action, where Duquesne won all three matches in very close contests. Senior captain Amelia Galin and junior Sophia Montero fell 4-6, senior captain Sasha Herman and junior Carina Cristobal lost 4-6, and junior Avery Isaac and sophomore Rebecca Hess were beaten 5-7, at lines one through three respectively.

The Dukes added to their lead with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Montero at line two, but the Raiders quickly responded. Galin dominated 6-3, 6-1 at line one, followed shortly after by Hess winning 6-3, 6-4. However, that would be all the points left for the Raiders, as lines four through six all fell. First-year Anson Silverfield lost 2-6, 6-3 (4-10) in a tightly contested match at line six.

COLGATE 1 - 6 ST. FRANCIS
The Colgate women's tennis team fell to St. Francis, 6-1 on Saturday afternoon, to cap off their season opening road trip. Sophomore Rebecca Hess continued her strong singles start to the season, picking up the Raider's sole point.

"Coming off a good effort against Duquesne, I thought we carried ourselves very well and competed hard today," said Prohaska. "We could have made excuses but we showed great fight on all courts. We really established some great habits in our first match weekend against excellent competition. This week will be important in polishing specific areas of our game, but I have loved our collective mentality to start the season."

Doubles action opened the matchup, where senior captain Amelia Galin and junior Sophia Montero quickly gave the Raiders the advantage with a 6-2 triumph. However, the Red Flash would win lines two and three to pick up the point.

Singles action followed, where the Red Flash added to their lead, picking up a 6-4, 6-1 win over Galin at line one. Montero at line two then lost a third set battle 2-6, 7-5, 2-6. However, Hess put the Raiders on the board with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win at line three to scrape a point back for the Raiders. St. Francis then took the remaining three singles matches to win the matchup 6-1.

The Raiders return to action next weekend, where they will take on Boston University for their home opener, at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Drumlins.
