Colgate Falls to UAlbany, 55-41

Matthews leads Raiders with 12 points in defeat

HAMILTON – Colgate (4-5, 0-0 Patriot) fell victim to 10 made 3-pointers by UAlbany (8-2, 0-0 America East) in a 55-41 decision Monday night at Cotterell Court. The Great Danes connected on 43.5 percent from behind the arc en route to their sixth consecutive win.

Each of the first two quarters were decided by three points. Tatiana Matthews scored six straight points in a seesaw opening frame that saw the visitors jump ahead, 13-10, on a made 3-pointer by Julia Palomo late in the stanza.

UAlbany opened the second with a 9-0 run sparked by 3-pointers from Lara Langermann and Delanie Hill. Colgate countered with an 11-2 burst capped off by free throws from Lara Cook cutting the deficit to 24-21. Another trey from Hill extended UAlbany's lead to six, which would be its halftime lead 29-23.

Laila Hankerson's layup on Colgate's first possession of the second half trimmed the margin to 29-25. The teams traded baskets through the first five minutes of the frame, but the Great Danes built a double-digit lead after finishing the quarter on an 8-0 run with triples from Hill and Langermann.

Another 3-pointer from Langermann helped UAlbany stretch its lead to 22 points, 53-31, before Colgate closed the game on a 10-2 surge to nearly slice the deficit in half. Cook made Colgate's only 3-pointer in the contest (1-for-12) during the run but the margin was too much to overcome in the 55-41 decision.

Matthews led the Raiders with 12 points along with six rebounds. Christina Midgette secured a pair of steals to lead the defensive effort. Colgate shot 32.6 percent overall (14-43) and was 1-of-12 from behind the arc. UAlbany finished with a 38.3 percent clip from the field (18-47) with its 10 made 3s.
