COACH HARDER'S COMMENTS
"It was an absolute battle but we played a strong disciplined game tonight and the team was rewarded for it."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Colgate wasted little time jumping on the board with a St. Lawrence turnover leading to the game's first goal. Metz cleaned up a loose puck right in front of the net giving the Raiders a 1-0 advantage 2:45 into the contest.
St. Lawrence countered with the equalizer five minutes later. Shortly after having a goal waved off, the Saints found the back of the net on a 2-on-1 finish by Nicholas Beneteau to knot the score at 1-1 at the 7:09 mark of the first.
Both teams traded power play opportunities and came up empty on their chances before Merner handed Colgate a one-goal lead late in the period. Merner drifted toward the center of the point and rifled a low shot through traffic for a 2-1 advantage with 12 seconds left, giving the Raiders a 2-1 edge through one term.
The Raiders had a slew of chances to pad their lead but it was St. Lawrence who found the back of the net late in the second period. A deflected shot at the blue line led to a breakaway for Rasmus Svartstrom who went top shelf for the equalizer 2-2 with 4:44 remaining in the second period.
Colgate's hard work paid off just over a minute later when St. Lawrence net minder Mason Kucenski failed to cover a rebound in front of him. Wainwright beat two defenders to poke the loose puck past Kucenski giving the Raiders their one-goal lead right back, 3-2, through two periods.
First-year goaltender Dyck made 25 saves, including 10 in the third period to help Colgate capitalize on a late power-play opportunity. Norlin finished off a rebound in front of the net midway through the third period, which stood as the game's final goal. Colgate withstood St. Lawrence's last gasp to secure the 4-2 victory.
