Thirteen Colgate Football Notes on Gameday
Colgate-Richmond

  • Patriot League Foes | Colgate and Richmond meet for the first time as Patriot League foes on Saturday afternoon. The teams last met in 2017 when the Spiders bested the Raiders 20-17 at Andy Kerr Stadium to extend their head-to-head win streak to five games dating back to 1984.

  • National Success | Colgate (11) and Richmond (14) have appeared in the FCS Playoffs a combined 23 times, including 12 quarterfinal appearances and a pair of national championship game berths. Colgate reached the title game in 2003, five years before Richmond won the crown in 2008.

  • Previous Meeting | Both teams were ranked in the top 25 the last two times these two teams met. No 9 Richmond’s Griffin Trau kicked a 27-yard field goal with 1:29 remaining to lift the Spiders past No. 25 Colgate 20-17 on Sept. 9, 2017, in a back-and-forth affair at Andy Kerr Stadium.

  • Narrow Decisions | Each of the last two head-to-head meetings were decided by one possession. In the last matchup, Richmond needed 13 unanswered points to overcome a fourth-quarter deficit and beat No. 25 Colgate 20-17 in Hamilton. The year before, the seventh-ranked Spiders made just enough plays to top No. 22 Colgate, 38-31, in Richmond.

  • Stearney Finds the End Zone | Junior quarterback threw for a career-high four touchdown passes in Colgate’s 41-21 victory over Cornell last Saturday. He finished 16-for-25 for 206 yards while connecting with nine different receivers in the win.

  • Trooper to the House | Senior linebacker Trooper Price recorded two interceptions, the first two of his Colgate career, including a 43-yard pick-six that gave Colgate a 28-6 lead just before halftime in its eventual 41-21 victory over Cornell last Saturday.

  • Back 40 | With a 44-21 win over Fordham followed by Saturday’s 41-21 win over Cornell, Colgate has scored 40 points in back-to-back games for the first time since 2018 when the Raiders toppled Fordham (41-0) and Lehigh (48-6) in consecutive weeks en route to a Patriot League championship season.

  • Fours Were Wild | For the second time in five games to start the 2025 season, Colgate registered four interceptions. Trooper Price (2), Justyn Toler, and Kenny Langston made the difference at Cornell, while Tymir Wynn (2), Toler, and Christian Magliacano nabbed Monmouth for four in the opener.

  • Treyvhon at the Top | Treyvhon Saunders leads the FCS in receiving yards (682), receiving yards per game (136.4), receptions (49), and receptions per game (9.8). Saunders has eclipsed 100 receiving yards in four of five games this season, including a career-best 223 against Monmouth (8/29).

  • Offense In Stride | On the heels of back-to-back 40-point games, Colgate has scored 165 points through its first five contests of the 2025 season. That total is the most through five games since 1998 when the Raiders racked up 184 total points.

  • Fourth Quarter Defense | Colgate has shut out its opponent in the fourth quarter in back-to-back games and in three of the last four dating back to Villanova (9/6). In those three games Colgate has outscored its opponents 20-0 in the final frame.

  • Pick Your Poison | Despite playing one less game than every other Patriot League opponent to date, the Raiders lead the conference with 10 interceptions on the year. Colgate has two games with four picks thus far this season.

  • Lucky Number 13 | Colgate considers 13 to be a lucky number. The University celebrates Colgate Day every Friday the 13th. In 1817, 13 men met in the frontier settlement of Hamilton, N.Y., to found the Baptist Education Society of New York. They are said to have backed up their experiment in education with 13 dollars and 13 prayers, which is why 13 is considered a lucky number at Colgate.

  • With a win the Raiders would…
    • …start 2-0 in Patriot League play for the first time since 2021
    • …secure their first win over Richmond since 1983
    • …record three consecutive wins for the first time since November 2023
    • …improve to 2-1 at home this season with two straight wins in Hamilton
    • …remain unbeaten in Patriot League play (2-0)
    • …snap a five-game head-to-head losing streak against Richmond
