Raiders Outlast Mountain Hawks

Colgate came back from a two-set deficit to win 3–2

HAMILTON — Colgate outlasted Lehigh in a five-set thriller on Saturday at Cotterell Court. The Raiders' victory was highlighted by a strong defensive effort with 58 digs and 6 total blocks, which helped the team rally from a two-set deficit. Colgate's resilience secured the win in the decisive fifth set, 15–11.

COACH BAKER'S COMMENTS
"This was a great match with two good teams slugging it out.  Lehigh is a physical team who challenged us all night.  

"I loved our response and fight which is going to be very important for the rest of the season.  We will learn from this win and keep battling a very tough league schedule."

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1 | Colgate 25, Lehigh 17
The first set began with the Raiders and Mountain Hawks exchanging points, keeping the score tight at 9–9. Colgate found momentum with Tiana Owens and Milan Bayless contributing multiple kills, pushing the home team ahead, 15–11. A sequence of errors by Lehigh, including attack errors and service faults, allowed the Raiders to extend their lead further, 20–14. The Raiders' serving was effective, with service aces from Bayless and Rachael Martinez. The set concluded at 25–17 in favor of the Raiders.

Set 2 | Lehigh 25, Colgate 21
Colgate initially held a slim lead at 9–5, capitalizing on Lehigh's errors. However, the Mountain Hawks shifted the momentum their way with a string of points to take a near 15–13 lead. Bayless and Owens kept the Raiders competitive with timely kills to regain the lead 17–16. The Mountain Hawks capitalized off of the Raiders' attacking errors to take control of set two. Lehigh closed the set 25–21 to level the score, 1–1. 

Set 3 | Lehigh 25, Lehigh 12
Bayless initiated the scoring for the Raiders with a kill, but a series of attack errors allowed Lehigh to build momentum. Lehigh strung along a series of blocks that contributed to the Mountain Hawks' lead, 8–6. With the score tied at 10–10, Lehigh pulled away with a forceful 14-2 run. The set concluded with Lehigh serving consecutive aces to seal the 25–12 win for Lehigh.

Set 4 | Colgate 25, Lehigh 14
Colgate started strong in the fourth, including back-to-back kills by Owens, assisted by Julia Oster. The Raiders capitalized on Lehigh's errors to build their momentum and extend their lead, 8–4. Frances Torres and Bayless were instrumental in building the lead, each recording kills that pushed the score to 12–5 and beyond. Julia Headley clinched the set for the Raiders with a final kill, assisted by Deren Cukur. The Raiders regained energy to take a 25–14 victory and push for a fifth set.

Set 5 | Colgate 15, Lehigh 11
In a tightly contested fifth set, Colgate secured a 15-11 victory over Lehigh, driven by key contributions from several players. The Raiders gained an early 4–2 edge with a service ace and two kills. The two teams traded points but the Raiders maintained their lead, 10–7. Late in the set, Colgate clinched four points off three kills and a service ace to earn match point, 14–10. Maddie Rudolph solidified the game 15–11 off a decisive kill.

GAME NOTES
  • Bayless led the Colgate offense with 19 kills on 46 attempts, contributing a total of 21.5 points. 
  • Owens added 16 kills and registered 11 digs, accumulating 17 points. 
  • Schabes was pivotal in setting up plays, recording 23 assists, serving up two aces and 13 digs. 
  • Torres was effective at the net, posting seven kills on 15 swings and assisting on three blocks.

UP NEXT
Colgate holds a 14-6 overall record and is undefeated at 9-0 in the Patriot League. They will hit the road to face Holy Cross on Friday at 6 p.m. followed by a Saturday showing at Army at 4 p.m.
