Raiders Drop Season Opener, 1-0

#25 Syracuse scores in 87th minute to defeat Colgate

HAMILTON — A late goal pushed No. 25 Syracuse over Colgate 1-0 in both teams' season opener Thursday evening at Beyer-Small '76 Field.

"I am really proud of the group - incredible effort and intent. The guys deserved better. We will now shift our focus and move on to preparing for Virginia," said head coach Erik Ronning.

The Orange scored in the 87th minute after Chimere Omeze headed a ball off the post, but followed it and placed his rebound into the back of the net.

Colgate had its second free kick chance of the second half with 17:22 left. Cason Stafford fired a shot, but it was a routine save for the Orange keeper.

In the 62nd minute, Blake Pipkin played a free kick into the box, finding the head of fellow first-year Julian Di Lucia, but he got denied on a stop by the goalie. It led to a Raiders' corner that they could not convert. Colgate also had its first corner of the game two minutes prior.

The Raiders had a couple of chances late in the first half. In the 40th minute, Jacob Blackwin received a pass and dribbled to the top of the box before ripping a shot that forced the goalie to go low and make a save.

Three minutes later, Colin Hughes chased down a lofted pass toward the box. The junior was just a step too late as he got his foot on it but could not get it past the goalie.

Syracuse had seven shots in the first half, but the Raiders' backline held strong, allowing just one shot on target. Oliver Townend made two stops in the final 20 minutes of the game, finishing with three saves.

Colgate heads to Charlottesville, Va., to play another ACC opponent in No. 13 Virginia Sunday. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
