Beerling's Goal Leads Colgate Past #13 Virginia

Oliver Townend makes career high eight saves in 1-0 victory

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Jack Beerling's first-half goal was the difference in Colgate's 1-0 victory at No. 13 Virginia Sunday evening.

"Following the Syracuse game, we told the guys the effort and focus put forth was the expected standard every game, and that certainly showed tonight. Our guys sacrificed and battled for 90 minutes and earned an incredible road win." said head coach Erik Ronning.  "Jack made an amazing play, the entire group defended like warriors, and Oliver was excellent. "

"I am proud of the effort and expect to build upon this and continue to improve as a team.  Our goal is to be better every game. We will enjoy it for now, but turn our attention to Stonehill beginning tomorrow."

Beerling scored his first career goal in the 36th minute to put the Raiders ahead 1-0. The sophomore received the ball outside the penalty arc after a defender fell, then ripped a one-timer into the bottom left corner.

Oliver Townend stood out in goal, making a career-high eight saves to earn his first shutout of the season and the sixth of his career.

In the 76th minute, Townend made his biggest save of the game when he stopped a Cavaliers' penalty kick.

Virginia kept pressing hard in the final 10 minutes, trying to find an equalizer. Townend made two more saves, one in the 84th minute and another two minutes later, keeping his clean sheet.

The Cavaliers had back-to-back corners in the 86th minute, followed by two consecutive shots, but Colgate's defense stood tall again, and the Raiders held on for the victory.

Connor Cates had an opportunity to add to the lead in the second half when he fired a shot in the 68th minute that went off target.

Virginia also had back-to-back corner kicks in the 71st minute and another two minutes later that the Raiders fended off.

Colgate's first chance came in the 10th minute when Jacob Blackwin fired a shot, leading to the Raiders' lone corner kick of the contest.

Townend made four saves in the first half to keep the Cavaliers off the scoreboard, including two in the opening 15 minutes.
