BOSTON — Colgate's season ended in a back-and-forth triple overtime thriller in the Patriot League quarterfinals on Tuesday evening, falling to Boston University 18-17.
BU notched the game-winning goal with 2:13 left in the third OT. The Raiders had several chances to score throughout all three extra periods, including a goal from
Hunter Drouin that got called off and a shot from
Jack Turner that hit the post.
Colgate equalized twice in the early stages of the opening quarter, with
Rory Connor getting the visitors' first to knot the score at 1-1. Drouin tied the score at 2-2 and started a 3-0 run that ended with tallies from
Liam Connor and Turner. After two more from BU, Turner completed his hat trick with two straight, putting his team up 6-4.
Boston University recorded the final goal of the first, then two more at the start of the second.
Patty Eldredge broke the streak, then Drouin followed less than four minutes later, tying the score at 8-8. Colgate got the last two of the quarter after a BU goal, with Drouin and
Colin Ruppenstein scoring in the final three and a half minutes.
In the third, the teams exchanged blows in the opening eight minutes.
Michael Minicus scored on a man-up chance with 11:13 remaining.
Donnie Tedesco notched the first of his career at the 7:01 mark, then Ruppenstein tallied his second to stop a 2-0 Terrier streak.
Ryan Favaro put one in with just over two minutes left, giving the Raiders a 14-13 advantage before BU tied it back up.
The Terriers scored just over a minute into the fourth, but Colgate followed with a tally from Drouin at the 12:06 mark. Turner fired one home with 6:11 left, and Minicus equalized to send the game to overtime with 3:29 remaining.
Rory Connor tied his career high for the third-straight game with eight points, logging a career-best seven helpers and one goal. Drouin also matched his career high with seven points, recording four goals and three assists. Additionally, Turner logged four goals, and
Liam Connor registered a goal and two assists.
Aidan Murnane picked up a season-high six ground balls and led the team with three caused turnovers.
Quinn Fitzsimmons caused two turnovers and scooped up four ground balls.
Matt LaCombe made 12 saves in goal.

"I couldn't be more proud of our seniors for their leadership, heart, dedication, drive, and how they carried themselves.
I am so proud to coach at this university with our alumni base and the support that we have had from them and our administration this year. Ever since I've been the head coach here, it's been an honor. I'm honored to coach these 53 young men who pour their hearts and souls out at practice, in the film room, and in the weight room.
I was so happy to watch them play today. They were playing fast and fearless as we asked them to do. Unfortunately, we were on the wrong side of a triple overtime game, but what a turnaround season we had and what an unbelievable group that I am honored to coach.
I am also proud of my staff, not just our coaches, but our athletic trainer and others who are with us every day. We have the best staff, and I'm the luckiest coach out there."
