Softball Swept by Syracuse on the Road

Misken and Servedio both throw complete games in doubleheader sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A rainy Wednesday afternoon in Syracuse saw the Raiders fall to the Orange in two low-scoring pitching duels at Skytop Softball Complex. Bailey Misken threw eight and two-thirds innings with four strikeouts and no earned runs in a 2-1 extra-inning loss, while Maya Servedio tossed the second complete game of the day in a 3-1 decision.

In game one, first-year outfielder Kiley Shelton lifted her sixth home run of the season, tied for most in the Patriot League, while junior catcher Quinn Livesay scored the Raiders' only run of game two after launching her fifth double of the season.

Game 1 - Colgate 1, Syracuse 2 (9 innings)

Misken allowed base runners in the opening two innings but comfortably worked out of both situations unscathed. In the third, however, an infield hit coupled with a throwing error put a runner on second with no outs. After a ground ball to first moved the runner over, a deep fly to left field allowed Syracuse to draw first blood.

Kara Fusco sent a rocket to shortstop in the visitors' half of the fourth, and Livesay found her way on base after being hit by a pitch to give the Raiders their best opportunity of the game with one out

To the Raiders' chagrin, Syracuse induced a ground ball and a fly out to end the inning without conceding the equalizer.

Colgate stranded two more Orange base runners in the fifth frame after Rachel Carney and Jillian Herbst made back-to-back web gems to rob Syracuse of two hits in the fourth.

In the top of the sixth, Kiley Shelton lifted her sixth home run of the season to draw Colgate even.

Syracuse put two runners on to begin the bottom of the sixth, but Misken worked her way out of a bases-loaded jam to set the stage for a pivotal seventh stanza.

But neither team wanted to claim victory in seven, and six outs later game one headed to extra innings.

With Carney on third, Fusco drilled a come-backer to the Orange pitcher, but she miraculously fielded it cleanly to retire the side. The Raiders' hitting woes continued into the ninth when they had bases loaded with no outs and could not push the winning run across the plate.

The Orange worked the bases loaded in the ensuing half inning, scoring the winning run when their number three batter was hit by a pitch.

Game 2 - Colgate 1, Syracuse 3

A one, two, three first inning from Maya Servedio was quickly undone in the second when three singles loaded the bases with one out.

Servedio walked in the first run of the game but limited the damage with a strikeout and a fly out to work out of the early jam.

Nine-spot hitter Nora Megenity poked a double to left center for Colgate's first hit of game two, and Carney followed up with a hard-hit single to right.

A Shelton walk was then sandwiched between two strikeouts with the bases loaded, and in a nerve-wracking 12-pitch at-bat, Kara Fusco struck out swinging to leave three Raiders left on base.

Syracuse tacked on another run in the bottom of the third with a solo home run.

Elizabeth Nitka responded with a chopper to shortstop, where she beat out a throw and allowed Livesay to score from third.

That was as close as Colgate could get after Servedio wrapped up her complete game with a one, two, three sixth, allowing only six hits and three earned runs while striking out four on the day.

The Raiders put two more runners aboard in the top of the seventh but could not even the score as Syracuse completed the doubleheader sweep.
