HAMILTON – The No. 3 Colgate women's hockey team will face off against No. 6 Cornell in an NCAA Quarterfinal on Saturday afternoon. The winner punches their ticket to the Frozen Four in Durham, N.H. to face off against the victor of the other Quarterfinal contest between No. 2 Wisconsin and No. 7 St. Lawrence.
This will be the fourth time this year the two squads square off after Colgate swept the regular season home-and-home series and bested the Big Red in the ECAC Semifinals last weekend. In the three meetings this year, Colgate has outscored Cornell, 14-4.Â
However, the Big Red boast one of the best players in the nation, senior forward Izzy Daniel. A top-three finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award, Daniel ranks second among Division I skaters in assists per game (1.09) and third in points per game (1.72).Â
Despite the undeniable skill set Daniel has yet to log a point against the Raiders this year, only contributing six shots in over 60 minutes of ice time.Â
Perhaps the struggles come from a stout Colgate defensive unit headlined by a pair of Hockey Commissioners Association Goalie of the Year Semifinalists, Hannah Murphy and Kayle Osborne. The duo is fourth and fifth, respectively, in GAA this year and also ranks in the top 15 nationally in save percentage.Â
The Raiders also trot out a top defensive pairing of Sydney Bard, an invitee to the U.S. National Women's Team Evaluation Camp, and Sydney Morrow, a second-team All-ECAC selection who is tied for the most points in the country by a blueliner with 39 tallies this season.Â
Colgate's veteran presence is also sure to make an impact, with eight combined seniors and fifth years playing nearly 20 postseason games since 2019. Even with the vast experience, the core group of Danielle Serdachny, Allyson Simpson, Kaitlyn O'Donohoe, and Bard are seeking their first NCAA tournament win and the program's first since 2018.Â
Offensively, Serdachny has been the catalyst for the Raiders for almost the entirety of her career, leading the team in points for four out of her five seasons in maroon and white. In her first year    as a Raider, she ended the season second on the team with 32 points, one tally behind the squad-leader.
Serdachny's 61 points this year place her in a tie for third in the nation, but she is not Colgate's only scoring threat. Third-team All-ECAC forward Elyssa Biederman has chipped in 15 multi-point games this season, while Kristýna Kaltounková is third in the country with 11 power-play goals in 34 appearances.
