Raiders Falter on the Road

Colgate records season-high eight penalty corners in 4-1 defeat at Towson

TOWSON, Md. — Colgate dropped a 4-1 decision at Towson Sunday afternoon.

Despite recording a season-high eight penalty corners, the Raiders only found the back of the cage once in the defeat.

"Towson played a great game today, we hesitated and slowed down our game and it gave Towson the opportunity to eliminate us in the midfield. I'm happy that we could pick up intensity in the second half and get on the board. We need to continue to focus on our possession passing game and midfield transfers," said head coach April Cornell-DeAngelis.

Charlotte Hamilton got Colgate on the board just under two minutes into the third. The Raiders got awarded a penalty corner and thought they had scored, but the goal got called off, earning the stroke instead. Hamilton converted the penalty shot to make it 3-1.

The Tigers pulled ahead 1-0 three and a half minutes into the first when Sarah Hatfield scored off a feed from Madisyn Howard. Towson got awarded a penalty stroke a 1:13 later that Olivia Handelong put in, making it 2-0.

The home team made it 3-0 just 38 seconds into the third. Following Hamilton's goal, Towson added another off the stick of Anouk Westerink with 4:17 left in the third, pushing its advantage back to three at 4-1.

Grace Schmelzinger had an opportunity right at the start of the fourth when she took a shot that got stopped by the keeper. Colgate had two straight corners with six minutes to play. Hamilton recorded a shot on the first one that landed wide.

The Raiders also had five corners in the third quarter. The first came with just over nine minutes left in the third, with Dani Palmer putting a shot off target. Shortly after, Sarah Killcommons ripped one that got blocked.

Colgate had back-to-back corners with four minutes left in the third. Ahria Dhillon fired a shot on the first attempt that got blocked.

The Raiders earned their first corner of the game with just under 13 minutes left in the second, from which Schmelzinger had an open look, but she put her shot wide left. Tyler Argilagos also had a chance when she chased down a pass on a breakaway but could not gain control of it to get a shot off.

Colgate was kept quiet offensively in the first but managed to stop the Tigers on two other penalty corners.

Claire van Kempen started in goal, making three saves. She was relieved by Mackie Mann, who played the final 18 minutes, stopping two shots and holding the Tigers scoreless.
