Stafford's Goal Lifts Colgate Past Holy Cross

Raiders Defeat Crusaders, 1-0

HAMILTON — Cason Stafford scored a late goal to earn the Raiders a 1-0 victory over Holy Cross Saturday evening.

"I am very pleased with the commitment and attention to detail from our team tonight. Our defensive principles were a big area of focus during our training sessions this past week, and our team did a terrific job executing our defensive game plan," said assistant coach Tim Stanton.

"Our group continues to improve each week, and we're excited about the team we can grow into as the season progresses. It's time for another strong week on the practice field to get ready for a dangerous Loyola team next weekend."

Stafford found the back of the net in the 75th minute to put his team ahead. A free kick by Aidan Wright got saved by the keeper, but Stafford followed the rebound and finished it home. It marks his second goal of the season and the first game-winner of his career.

Stafford had a chance to add to his tally with 10 minutes remaining when he fired a shot that got saved. The Raiders had a corner with five minutes left, but nothing was going.

Earlier in the second, Stafford had another opportunity when he ripped one that went wide.

Colgate recorded three shots in the first half.

The Raiders' first chance came in the 11th minute when Blake Pipkin got a good look at the goal in the box and fired a shot that got saved. In the 22nd minute, Jacob Blackwin took a rip that went just wide and 16 minutes later, Connor Cates put one over the crossbar.

The Raiders' backline held the Crusaders scoreless and allowed just three shots. Holy Cross also had one corner that Colgate shutdown. Oliver Townend picked up his third win and second shutout in goal.
