BALTIMORE — Blake Pipkin equalized in the 52nd minute, but the Raiders fell 2-1 to Loyola Saturday afternoon.
The loss marks Colgate's first Patriot League defeat. The Raiders now hold a 2-1-2 conference mark while maintaining a 4-4-3 overall record.
"We didn't put our best performance together today, and Loyola made us pay for that. We had some good stretches of play and individual performances, especially from some players off the bench. It takes more than some good moments to win a game at this level, and we simply didn't do enough today," said head coach
Erik Ronning.
"Despite today's result, our team put itself in a good position in the Patriot League after a strong start, and we'll continue to fight for three points in every game."
The Greyhounds got going right out of the gate, scoring in the 2nd minute to pull ahead 1-0. Chris Ogor played the ball to Charlie Herley, who made a short pass across the six-yard box to Jake Sweeney for a shot he finished off.
Pipkin knotted the score at 1-1 with his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 52nd minute. The first-year took the ball away from a Greyhound player in the Raiders' attacking end and dribbled to the top of the box. He then played a short pass to Colin Hughes, who quickly gave the ball back to Pipkin, allowing him to get in the box and slot a shot into the bottom left corner.
Oscar Halls scored the game-winning goal in the 64th minute. Sean McEvoy played a corner perfectly to Halls' head, and he finished it from right in front.
Colgate had a few late chances to pull back even. Connor Hearn fired a shot in the final seconds that landed off target. The Raiders also had a corner kick in the 84th minute, from which Aidan Wright took a shot that went over the crossbar.
In the 73rd minute, Colgate had back-to-back shots. Pipkin got a good look at the goal, but his attempt got blocked, and Cason Stafford tried to follow the rebound but put his shot off target.
Conor Geraghty dribbled to the top of the 18-yard box in the 60th minute and took a rip that got saved by Loyola's keeper.
The Raiders were held without a shot in the first half but prevented the Greyhounds from getting another on the board.
