Colgate Narrowly Falls to #5 Clarkson

First period goal too much to overcome in Raiders’ first league loss

HAMILTONThe No. 4 Colgate Raiders fell to the No. 5 Clarkson Golden Knights, 1-0, in the Class of 1965 Arena on Saturday night. Despite outshooting Clarkson 35-24, the Raiders were unable to equalize in the 52 minutes following the Knights' first-period goal.

The physical clash was chalked with intensity from the jump with players' hitting the ice on numerous occasions. Clarkson weathered the storm, however, led by goalie Michelle Pasiechnyk who made 35 saves in the shutout.

Colgate's best chance of the second period came when senior forward Kristýna Kaltounková weaved through the Knights' defense, setting up fifth-year defender Sydney Bard with a beautiful pass that could not find its way past Pasiechnyk in net.

At the four-minute mark of the second frame, a flurry of Raider shots were stopped before they found paydirt, including back-to-back wristers from Kaltounková and Elyssa Biederman at point blank range.

After continuing to outshoot the visitors well into the third, Colgate nearly found the equalizer when Biederman sent in a one-timer from the right faceoff circle. Unfortunately for the Raiders, the puck clanked off the pipe to hand Greg Fargo's squad their first ECAC loss of the 2023-24 season.
