MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. — Junior defender
Charlotte Hamilton scored the game-winning goal in the third quarter to help Colgate secure a 2-1 win over Lindenwood Friday afternoon.
Sophomore
Alice Walton put the Raiders ahead first with 8:46 remaining in the second, notching her second goal of the season.
Lindenwood tied it up in the third quarter with a goal off the stick of Orla Folan, making it 1-1 with eight and a half minutes left.
Colgate answered right back when Hamilton tallied her first career goal and what would be the game-winner a minute and 23 seconds later to put her team back ahead 2-1.
The Raiders dominated right from the start, outshooting the Lions 5-0 in the opening 15 minutes and also drawing two penalty corners. Colgate had three shots in 20 seconds, with Walton,
Lily Schoonmaker, and
Annie Lake recording shots.
Colgate tallied four more shots in the second quarter, including a couple on target from
Ella Murphy and
Dani Palmer. Following the halftime break, St. Louis native
Anna Lochhead ripped one that got saved.
Goalie
Claire van Kempen made three saves in the final five minutes of the third, including a big one following a Lindenwood penalty corner. The sophomore finished with four stops in the game.
In the fourth, the Raiders kept trying to add to the lead. Murphy released a shot 22 seconds in that went just wide of the goal. Shortly after, Walton had one denied on a save by the Lions' goalie. Colgate also had back-to-back corners at the end of the game that it could not capitalize on.
The Raiders finished with a 16-7 advantage in shots, including an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. Colgate totaled eight penalty corners in the contest compared to Lindenwood's four.
