MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. — Ella Murphy notched the overtime game-winner to give the Raiders a 3-2 win over Saint Louis Sunday.
Murphy and
Grace Schmelzinger both tallied three points in the game, with a goal and an assist each.
Goalie
Claire van Kempen had a career-best performance in the victory, tallying eight saves. She made three straight stops following a penalty corner in the second and logged four saves in the third to shut down several SLU scoring chances.
Just over two minutes into the extra period, the Raiders earned a penalty corner inserted by Schmelzinger. The sophomore played a pass to
Sarah Killcommons, which Murphy buried into the top left corner of the cage.
Both teams tallied a goal in the fourth quarter. Schmelzinger notched her first of the season just under two minutes in, giving Colgate a 2-1 advantage. The Billikens quickly answered back with an equalizer off the stick of Shaya Dry less than three minutes later.
Saint Louis was first to strike when Josefina Perez scored just under nine minutes into the first.
The Raiders responded three minutes later when
Anna Lochhead played a pass in the circle to
Dani Palmer, who tipped it into the back of the cage, knotting the score up at 1-1. It was the sophomore's first goal of the season.
Following the goals in the first, neither side put one in the next two quarters. The Raiders held a 4-3 edge in shots after the first 15 minutes, with
Chase Cmaylo,
Alice Walton, and Murphy putting shots wide of the goal.
Colgate had another chance in the second when Murphy ripped a shot that landed to the right of the goal.
Alli Troth had a good look in the third, but her attempt got stopped by the keeper.
