HAMILTON — Rachel Alderfer scored for the second straight game, but Colgate fell 2-1 to Lock Haven Sunday afternoon.
Alderfer put the Raiders up 1-0 five and a half minutes into the first.
Grace Schmelzinger collected the ball off a penalty corner and passed to the senior, who tapped in a shot right in front of the goal.
Lock Haven tied it up less than four minutes later with a goal from Constanza Lopez Zabala. The Bald Eagles took the lead 1:50 into the second when Alexis Kern fired one into the cage. Lock Haven then held on to its lead for the remainder of the contest.
Colgate had five shots and two other penalty corners in the first quarter but couldn't quite capitalize. Just under four minutes into the game, the Raiders logged two shots off a penalty corner, with
Sarah Killcommons having hers saved and
Ella Murphy getting hers blocked.
Claire van Kempen made a pair of big saves in the opening 15 minutes to keep the scoreboard even.
The Raiders continued to attack, with
Anna Lochhead getting a good look with three minutes remaining in the first, but she got denied by the goalie. The sophomore also had Colgate's lone shot in the second, which she put just wide of the cage.
After the halftime break, both sides were quiet offensively in the third. A minute in,
Chase Cmaylo ripped a shot that landed off target.
The Raiders had one final penalty corner opportunity with just over six minutes remaining in the fourth, during which
Bronwen Rees-Wiedemann fired a shot that got stopped by the goalie.
Alderfer made an impressive defensive save with a minute and a half left in the game, running across the goal and then jumping to swat the ball out of midair.
Colgate finished with an 8-7 advantage in shots in the game.
FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach April Cornell-DeAngelis
"It was a strong team effort but we had some chances against Lock Haven that we did not capitalize on. We have to keep up our team-first mentality and passing game because that will sustain our attack longer. Our defense did an outstanding job limiting Lock Haven's shots, specifically in the second half."
