ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell scored a late goal to secure a 1-0 win over Colgate in the Raiders' final non-conference game Tuesday evening.
Sydney Malaga put a header into the back of the net in the 86th minute to give the Big Red the lead.
Less than a minute after giving up the goal,
Cara Schmidlein had a great chance when she fired one from inside the box, forcing Cornell's goalie to make a diving save.
Colgate's first scoring opportunity came in the 14th minute after it got awarded a corner kick, resulting in
Lyna Schaffer ripping a shot off the bounce that rang off the crossbar.
The Raiders earned two more corners in the opening 45 minutes, but they could not convert.
Ally Giovino also had an opportunity in the 30th minute when she took a shot that went off target. A minute later,
Ellie Stokes had one saved.
In the 20th minute, the Raiders mustered off a flurry of three straight Big Red shots.
Alli Popham made a beautiful save on the first one after a Cornell player got a free look in front of the goal.
The second half began with Colgate earning another two corner kicks in the opening 10 minutes.
Paige Foa fired a shot following the first corner, but it got stopped by the Big Red's goalie.
Emma Hickey subbed in goal for the second half. After Cornell earned a free kick from a dangerous spot, Hickey made a save off the set piece to keep the score knotted up. She also made a big stop off a header following a corner in the 81st minute.
Colgate's defense put in a valiant effort in shutting down numerous Cornell chances, such as six corners in the second half. First-year defender
Addie Brislen cleared one off the goal line with under 10 minutes remaining.
