Colgate Drops Heartbreaker to Dartmouth

Big Green Score in 87th Minute to Earn 1-0 Victory

HANOVER, N.H. — A late Dartmouth goal sent the Raiders home with a heartbreaker, falling 1-0 to the Big Green Thursday evening.

Dartmouth scored in the 87th minute when Carly Retterer found the back of the net off a pass from Aleena Seales to give her team the lead.

The Raiders tried to answer quickly, with Demi Maroudas and Sara Anelli ripping shots that got blocked a minute later. Colgate then had a corner kick in the 88th minute from which Lyna Schaffer was able to get a shot off, but she put it just wide of the goal.

Both sides were able to generate good offensive production throughout the second half. Colgate had four shots in the first nine minutes. One minute in, Anelli fired a shot but got denied by the keeper. She then had another one saved in the 64th minute. Ellie Stokes and Ari Bezanson also put a shot off target at the start of the half.

In the first, the Raiders had a chance early on with a corner kick in the opening minute, but they could not get anything going.

Colgate was held shotless until the 25th minute when Bezanson settled a cross and had a clear look from just outside the six-yard box, but put her shot just over the goal. Less than a minute later, Ally Giovino connected on a header off a cross that got saved by the Big Green's goalie.

Giovino had another good look in the 44th minute off a Dartmouth turnover. She dribbled into the box and fired one, but it got stopped.

Despite the late goal, Alli Popham was solid in net for Colgate. The junior made three saves and came out on several occurrences to deny the Big Green on other scoring chances.

The Raiders finished with an 18-11 advantage in shots, including a 6-5 edge in shots on goal.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Lyndse Hokanson

"Tonight was a great college soccer game - two teams absolutely laying it out there. I'm proud of the effort of our group and I thought for long stretches we were really on top of the game and looked more likely to break through. Unfortunately, Dartmouth was able to find a moment in the end that we weren't able to. I am looking forward to bringing the same mentality and approach on Sunday at home against Vermont."

UP NEXT
Colgate returns home Sunday for a 1 p.m. showdown against Vermont at Beyer-Small '76 Field. It will be Youth Day, and there will also be free food from Spudz Food Truck for the first 100 fans.
