HAMILTON – Colgate Women's Tennis has propelled itself to the top of the Patriot League standings backed by a strong returning core, vital captains, and an impressive freshman in the number one slot.
The Raiders hold an 11-4 overall record and sit 3-0 in league play. They're on pace to become one of the strongest women's tennis teams in program history with four matches remaining before the Patriot League Championships.
"The combination of our top six returning from last year, strong captains, an incredible freshman number one backed by a strong team belief and culture goes a long way," said Head Coach
Bobby Pennington.
With two Patriot League matches remaining, Colgate could reach the levels of the 1997-98 team which went 5-0, one short of the 1993-94 team that went 6-0, the two strongest teams in program history during league play.
"Depending on how we finish, with our goal of 5-0 in the league, this could be the best women's team in my 17 years and one of the best women's teams at Colgate," Pennington continued.
Throughout the season, Colgate has avenged three matches from last season, beating Providence (5-2), Siena (4-3), and St. Bonaventure (4-3). The Raiders also closed out a 4-3 win over league opponent Lehigh.
"The women are having an incredible season thus far. We lack the resources that some of our league opponents have so it's incomprehensible what they are doing at 11-4."
Amelia Galin has been one of the strongest freshmen for the Raiders, holding a 12-2 record for the No. 1 singles. Galin has been named Patriot League Female Player of the Week on two occasions. She also sits 6-5 from No. 1 doubles.
Katerina Atallah,
Emily Untermeyer, and
Emme Levenson were selected to captain this year's team. Levenson lines up with Galin from the No. 1 doubles slot while Atallah and Untermeyer line up together from the No. 2 doubles.
Sophomore
Jordan Ben-Shmuel was honored as Patriot League Female Player of the Week honorable mention. Fellow sophomores
Addie Eklund and newcomer
Eliza Podlas have held their own throughout the season.
Galin is joined by classmates
Natalie Fuller and
Sasha Herman who have put together strong seasons from their respective spots on the court.
Colgate prepares to face Loyola and George Mason this weekend before taking on Rochester and Bucknell on April 15th and 16th. The Patriot League Championships are set to take place April 27-30 in West Point, N.Y.
