Blair Takes Gold at ECAC/IC4A Championship

Colgate Track and Field Ends Indoor Season on a High Note

BOSTON – Five members of Colgate Men's and Women's Track and Field wrapped up their indoor season at the ECAC/IC4A Indoor Championship at Boston University.

Cole Blair started the day off for the Raiders by picking right up where he left off last week. Blair waited until his sixth and final jump to hit a mark of 7.37 meters (24'2"), which secured him a first place finish. This is his third gold medal at a championship meet in less than a year.

This marks the first time Colgate has placed first in an event at the IC4A Indoor Championships since Olympian Chris Dunn won the high jump in 1972.

Emma Pizer would be the next Raider to compete as the women's mile race got underway. She would finish 19th overall with a time of 5:00.69. This is an over 10-second personal best for Pizer in this event.

Not to be outdone, Ben Horner finished his 800 meter race with a personal best of his own at 1:51.95. This time was enough to secure a ninth-place finish and a spot in tomorrow's finals. He was followed by fellow 800 runner Carollin Mellin, whose 2:16.37 was just shy of her season's best and placed her 27th overall.

The final Raider to compete was Grace Kwitek, whose 1.60m jump (5'3") matched her personal best, which was set earlier in the season.

After his performance on Saturday, Horner returned to the starting line to compete in the 800 meters men's final. Horner's time of 1:51.95 was just 0.36 seconds off of the program record, and his race on Sunday was equally as impressive. Finishing with a time of 1:53.28, Horner crossed the finish line fifth overall, closing out Colgate's weekend of competition on a very high note.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Chelsea France

"Today was another major step for our team. Cole did Cole Blair things with another win in the long jump. Emma dropped a 13-second PR in the mile, an event she's not even specializing in. Grace has been consistently jumping on the cusp of our indoor school record as a freshman. "

"Ben Horner showed out in the 800m with a huge PR and advancement to the final tomorrow. And Carollin is back in full swing of training coming close to her indoor PR. I'm proud of this team and the momentum we have headed into outdoor. Colgate is coming."

On Horner's Sunday performance:

"Today was a great opportunity for Ben to toe the line with some talented athletes in our region and conference. Each race he's becoming more confident in his racing abilities with after beating some of the competitors in the Patriot League he didn't beat the previous week. He's finishing out the indoor season in a great position for outdoor."

UP NEXT
After Horner competes in Sunday's 800m final the Raiders will have a week of rest before heading down to Myrtle Beach to kick off their outdoor season at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational, which begins on Thursday, March 16th.
