Raiders Fall in San Diego

Colgate fell to South Dakota and San Diego on Friday evening

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Colgate Softball was bested on Friday evening by South Dakota and San Diego, falling 4-2 to the Coyotes and 14-2 to the Toreros.

Jillian Herbst, Alexis Romero, Rachel Carney, and Elizabeth Nitka all accounted for the four Raider runs scored today.

GAME 1 | South Dakota 4, Colgate 2

South Dakota held the pace the majority of the game, opening the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth off senior Bailey Misken. Freshman Maya Servedio came into the game in relief of Misken in the top of the fifth for the Raiders, but the Coyotes tacked on another run to lead 3-0.

Colgate tried to warm up its bats in the bottom of the fifth, as Taylor Ludwick and Quinn Livesay reached base on back-to-back at-bats, but a quick out would leave the Raiders stranded.

The Coyotes added one final run to their tally to lead by four going into the second half of the sixth. The Raiders caught a spark as freshman Cate Murray singled to right field to open the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Herbst was the next Raider to reach base and ultimately scored after Kara Fusco doubled to left field.

Romero came in the game to pinch run for Fusco and was brought home on senior Adrienne Nardone's at-bat to cut the deficit to 4-2. Unfortunately for Colgate, the comeback would be cut short as South Dakota got the final out of the sixth and put the Raiders down in order in the bottom of the seventh.

GAME 2 | San Diego 14, Colgate 2

Senior Carney opened the nightcap by reaching second base. A hit by Nardone to San Diego's shortstop brought Carney home and put the Raiders on the board.

The Toreros responded quickly, scoring five runs off pitcher Mia Edwards to lead by four after the first inning.

Colgate tried to get hot in the second, as Nitka singled to left center to get on base, then reached second after a ground out from Murray. Senior Bailey Burns singled on her first at-bat of the game to put Nitka in scoring position.

Nitka scored to cut the lead to 5-2 after Carney singled to the right side to end the Raiders' second-inning offense.

Unfortunately for Colgate, San Diego deepened the deficit to 10-2 in the second after scoring five runs off three pitches from Alexa Acker and Jenna Geffert. The Toreros then tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third to lead by 11 runs.

San Diego went on to score its 14th and final run of the game off Servedio in the top of the fourth before taking the game in five innings with a final score of 14-2.
