Colgate Splits Final Day in the Golden State

Colgate split the day with a shutout win

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Colgate split its final series in California after beating South Dakota and falling to San Diego. The Raiders shutout the Coyotes 2-0 and almost overcame the Toreros with a final score of 8-5.

Pitcher Alexa Acker tossed a complete game against South Dakota, allowing only three hits, zero runs, and three walks, and struck out six Coyotes. Junior Kara Fusco led the batters, going 4-for-5 at the plate with a home run, two hits, and an RBI.

GAME 1 | Colgate 2, South Dakota 0

Fusco opened the scoring with a dinger to left field in the top of the first to put the Raiders on the board. Freshman Acker struck out 2-of-3 batters in the bottom of the inning to keep the score at 1-0.

South Dakota tried to make some noise in the bottom of the second after two walks, and a fielding error loaded the bases for the Coyotes, but the defense prevailed, getting the final out to leave the runners out to dry.

The final run of the game was scored in the top of the third after freshman Cate Murray singled to open the inning, then advanced off a wild pitch. Murray was brought home two-at bats later by senior Adrienne Nardone, who singled up the middle to give the first-year player enough time to cross home plate and push the lead to its final tally of 2-0.

GAME 2 | San Diego 8, Colgate 5

San Diego controlled the pace of the game from the first inning after putting the Raiders down in order, then scoring two runs in the bottom of the first.

Colgate applied some pressure offensively in the second as Steph Jacoby walked, Taylor Ludwick reached on a fielder's choice, and Jillian Herbst walked in the first three at-bats. Unfortunately, Herbst and Ludwick were left stranded to close out the inning.

The Toreros extended their lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the second off an unearned run and a grand slam.

The Raiders retaliated in the third as Rachel Carney reached base off a walk and advanced to second after Fusco singled in the next at-bat. Steph Jacoby walked to load the bases right before senior Taylor Ludwick singled to center to score Fusco and Carney to cut the deficit to five runs.

The offense stayed hot as Herbst was the next to hit a single and score Jacoby. Elizabeth Nitka was the last Raider to get a hit in the inning, doubling to left center to bring Ludwick home and slash the lead to 7-5.

Sadly, San Diego scored a safety run in the bottom of the third that proved to be enough to crush the Colgate comeback and take the game at 8-5 after the Toreros put the Raiders down in order in 3-of-4 remaining innings.
